Hi,

Sorry for a bit of a personal question.

I'm about to buy a pair of "vintage" speakers. Thiel CS2.4. Not so vintage, but 20yo is Vintage now, I suppose.

I've heard a pair of these CS2.4, when they've been released.
Loved how they sound, and how they look
But at the time they were way too expensive (5K€ in France), or me too poor...So now is my chance, even if it's a bit irrational as I almost only buy "already approved by Amir' stuffs").

Supposingly 4 Ohms speakers, I see some datas about them, and they seems to go from 2.7 Ohms to 4 Ohms.
So they might be indeed kinda hard to drive, which is confirmed by many users.

I own a Wiim Amp Pro, which should technically works with 4 Ohms speakers, measured by Amir at 117W on 4 Ohms.

Is there a scientific way to be sure the Amp will not collapse, or shutdown, with such low impedance speakers ?

Or do I have to buy them, and see where it goes ?

Look at the reactive load test in the Amp Pro review - it goes into protection in most of the 2 Ohm tests. Stereophile's impedance plot shows it below 4R for much of the frequency range, so it's not just one dip to worry about. On the other hand the phase is close to 0 for a good chunk of the low impedance, and that's where it survived the 2R test so you _might_ get away with it if you don't turn it up too far.

If you want to be safe then look at the amps using PBTL configuration like the 3E A5, A7 and A7 Mono. Driving low impedance loads is what they're made for.

Many Thanks, I had the same datas, but was unable to read them as you did.
But still, looks like a bit of a gamble.

3e A7 means a preamp + a streamer (to get what the Wiim Amp Pro offers).
Looks like the Wiim Amp Ultra might handle 2 Ohms speakers

It's not a digital amp. You want more than a bench test? Nominal 4 ohm speakers may well operate below 4 ohms, tho. Depends as to what levels you want to drive the speakers and how far from the speakers you are as well....

I think it’s too close for comfort if you want to play loud.

(and as the poster above said, class D amps are analog)
