Lossy and lossier - but I am still enjoying it!

I recently cobbled together a 5.1.2 system so I could check out Apple Music's spatial audio offerings. Using the Loopback app from Rogue Amoeba, my M4 Mac mini can decode up to 7.1.4 immersive audio. I don't have that many available loudspeakers or amplification channels, so I decided to go 5.1.2.

I'm 73 and my hearing is definitely not as good as it used to be. Apple's implementation of Dolby Atmos is far from lossless. For these two reasons, I did not worry much about using equipment I had lying around, some of which is more than 20 years old. The loudspeakers are mismatched, but they all sound pleasing to my ears. I used pink noise and an old SPL meter to adjust the ear-level and height speakers to identical levels. I adjust the level of the subs by ear.

The L/R speakers are homebuilt from Wayne Parham's one pi design. I bought a PSB Alpha C10 for centre-channel duty. The surround speakers are little Yamaha NX-M5 and the height speakers are little Centrios model 401-2001, successors to the old Radio Shack Minimus 7. Subs are stacked for the free SPL that comes from acoustic coupling. The subs are identical, but with two different model numbers: Yamaha KS-SW100 and Yamaha NS-SW050.

The room is small and untreated. I own and use Sonarworks SoundID Reference for headphones, and I may upgrade to the multi-channel version somewhere down the road. For the time being, I am having a lot of fun discovering new music and rediscovering old favourites.

Big thanks to @amirm for this site. I recommend ASR whenever anyone asks me for audio equipment recommendations.

Today I had some time to play with this setup and with the new version I posted here. I knew from earlier experiments that I can extract 5.1.2 immersive audio from Apple's Music and TV apps, and I can also use the new Atmos 5.1.2 output devices to play multichannel audio from Logic Pro. Today I learned that the Mac can also play Atmos files like this one in MP4 format using the QuickTime player. Download and save, then open with QuickTime. Test tones for level adjustments can be found in MP4 format here.

I've been known to complain a bit about paying the Apple tax, but today I am enjoying life in the walled garden!

Sometimes we get so caught up in technical performance and gear that we forget to just enjoy the music! Glad you guys are enjoying it.
