Lossless Listening Arrives on Spotify Premium

First few tests are in:

Thoughts? :)
I'm pretty disappointed... says the guy who has a pair of Zu Audio speakers in the background. Talk about straining at a gnat, and swallowing a camel.

I'll check out the rest of what he says....

Edit:
Now I've watched the whole video.Aha, that was an interesting video. He brings up the fact that the OS mixer can degrade the signal, especially via Android. In addition, he can't get Spotify lossless to work with Spotify connect.

It would be interesting to know more about or how Wiim mixes the signal from Spotify. But before Spotify connect has lossless, it's probably no idea to investigate that, I can imagine.

He shows some interesting measurements in the video.

Get a bit perfect streamer like a WiiM and use Spotify Connect from your desktop or phone? Their range supports Spotify lossless…
It seems he's reporting OS issues rather than problems with the stream's integrity itself.
My observations too after watching that video.

Also, Spotify lossless doesn't seem to work for Spotify connect. I wonder how this will work with WiiM?

Well, these threads suggest it does just fine:

From the web: ".. Spotify's lossless audio quality is compatible with Spotify Connect, allowing you to stream music in high-fidelity FLAC format through supported third-party devices like those from Sony, Bose, and Samsung .."

Probably a software update away. When (or if) I can't guarantee. I most likely will not even enable it on my Samsung Ultra, I am sure I won't hear any difference to "very high" when I am on the move and listening to BT in-ears, good as they may be, even with LDAC or such enabled (I also never notived a difference enabling LDAC other than the IEM would burn they battery much faster).

I’m of two minds on this. First, it doesn’t matter to me. I’ve never bypassed the mixer except to experiment. I use PEQ and crossfeed for my headphones with Easy Effects and room correction PEQ for my speakers with Wiim Amp. So obviously bit-perfect is not a priority for me.

OTOH this is a “you had one job” head-slapper for those who care. Probably one of the downsides to using Electron for their app. Then again, their using Electron is probably the only reason why I can get the app on Linux. AFAIK none of the other streaming services offer a Linux app.

Can’t you use Lyrion and squeezelite on Linux to access Qobuz, Tidal, Spotify inter alia?

Spotty on LMS can’t do lossless, and they also dropped connect not long time ago.

Aren’t they looking into the former?

The guy who maintains it wasn’t in any rush last time I checked.

One positive sign is that Spotify indicated that their engineers are “interested” in adding exclusive mode support in the windows desktop app, hopefully it means this feature is finally getting traction after they enabled lossless, but at their pace it may take 5 more years before we see it.

Nor is Spotify in a rush to enable it for everybody - I am in California and zero signs of lossless for me, even with the latest app versions that supposedly support it.

I have lossless in CA on iPhone.

There is also the matter of the 44.1kHz cap. I'm not sure this can be called "lossless". Maybe "uncompressed" would be more accurate.

It’s likely to be losslessly compressed FLAC or are you suggesting they’ve downsampled tracks to 44.1khz? I would have expected that they would have got the tracks as 44.1khz from the record company. Whether the record company got those from is an entirely different matter.

It’s in fact compressed, and lossless. And 44.1khz/24bits is technically hi-res.

For those who got the high res, are you an early Spotify subscriber?
