Lossless Listening Arrives on Spotify Premium

Every song i play seems to have a bitrate of 700kbps.

FLAC doesn't run at constant bit rate, so my guess is that's just the average the FLAC lossless compression shoots for. There are 8 FLAC compression levels. 700kbps is probably an average for 16/44 content for the compression (lossless) level they use. Most of my 16/44 FLACs seem to fall between 600-800kbps with a compression level that's in the middle.

24-bit/44.1 kHz is the max i get from Spotify lossless.

24-bit/44.1 kHz is the max i get from Spotify lossless.

That's the max they advertise: "Up to 24/44.1". What I find interesting is that now they say "Up to 320k" for "Very high"... wasn't it a straight 320 without up to, like the other bit rates underneath, until lossless came along?

Clearly the coding means:
media_format: 16: Code for FLAC.
bitrate: 700: 700 kbps (average I assume). But I find it very curious that it says 700 for a 24 bit depth... if 16 results in a 700, 24 should be like 1350 or so... unless 8 bits are simply padded, in which case FLAC makes quick work of eliminating them...
sample_rate: 44100: Sample rate.
bits_per_sample: 24: Bit depth.

Yeah 16bit or 24bit has the same 700kbps on my streamer.

Could this just be metadata that’s wrong? Is anything actually depending on this `bitrate` field?

"bitrate: 700" may just be a hand-written tag for internal identification of lossless, not an accurate readout of actual data rates.

So long as the end result nulls properly against the lossless source files, who cares what the stream is called in a CLI report.

The source track from my earlier post has 797Kbps btw.

I actually have been trained to spot differences, so I can simply ask "Play the percussion solo at 4:33" and I'll be able to tell (again, with specific tracks I ask for).
I don't know, 4:33 should compress really well without any audible change. Or was it 4'33''?
;) ;)

Agree it is difficult, but under ideal conditions possible to discern the difference.
I’ve begun to suspect the master, and internal handling/processing of the audio is more important than the final codec and bitrate applied. I switched to Apple Music earlier this year after reading their Apple Digital Master whitepaper and was impressed that they seem to be the only service that actually has standards as to what gets uploaded, and how they process/convert the audio into its different distribution formats. Other services could be doing this adequately too, but the silence on the subject is not confidence inspiring.
No need to suspect, the master is indefinitely more important than codec and bitrate today.

Available in France today as well :)

Edit: first track i played '' this content is not available in lossless format '' :/
Edit 2: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th track, different artists, same message... Ok so the option does nothing so far.
Edit 3: Now it works! Great

Keep in mind that if you enable Lossless in the App, then stream to an external device, you have to once again select Lossless specifically for that device.
Otherwise it will default back to 320Kbps.
Thanks for pointed that out. I had assumed the setting would be sent to the playing device along with the requested content. Do you know if the setting sticks to the device/user or does it need to be done every time?

So after a bit of experimenting it looks like the settings sticks to the device and is there the next time I connect. I haven't been able to test whether connecting with a different account makes any difference. So far only my Nodes and Denon AVR-X6800H support lossless. None of my Google speakers/Chromecast devices do.

I have three Wiims. I can not manually choose Lossless first time: '' this content is not available in lossless format ''. Just let music flow and wait when you are invited to join Lossless with Push message. After that Lossless activates. One of my Wiims is still out of Lossless since it has not been played yesterday. Not the best UI imo.

A friend told me about Lossless coming out yesterday evening, so I checked and it was there!
I'll get some listening tests going both in bluetooth and PC on my Dali Zensor 3 pair, although I've already seen Goldensound video about Spotify Lossless not being Bit Perfect like Qobuz and Tidal.

By the way, last month here in Italy we got a raise of + €3/month for Spotify's subscription. So my family plan went from €18 to €21 a month.

Curious about it.. How do I set my Denon to Spotify lossless? Currently.. I use Spotify connect and "send it to my AVR.. Currently all my devices show lossless but I never cared to set te Denon to anything.. Was I listening to 128 Kbps all these years .. and enjoying it?? Damn! My audiophiles creds are disappearing faster then I previously thought :(

:D

Normally with spotify connect it show the device your playing on and you can set it to lossless.
If i do remote control on a app (windows/android/apple) then it shows the amp in the app.

Denon was 320kbps before, now in the mobile app when you cast you can click on the receiver and manually set its quality.

I just went to Spotify_Connect and it shows lossless. I didn't have to do anything... All is well ..
