It's data compression, shrinking the size of a file. But it does not compress audio content. The fact that it is lossless compression is lost on some people.No. It is so not, in any way.
It is utterly lossless. Any other claim is utter ignorance. Thank you. It's data compression, shrinking the size of a file. But it does not compress audio content. The fact that it is lossless compression is lost on some people.
"FLAC (/flæk/; Free Lossless Audio Codec) is an audio coding format for lossless compression of digital audio, developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation, and is also the name of the free software project producing the FLAC tools, the reference software package that includes a codec implementation. Digital audio compressed by FLAC's algorithm can typically be reduced to between 50 and 70 percent of its original size<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC#cite_note-looking-4"><span>[</span>4<span>]</span></a> and decompresses to an identical copy of the original audio data."

It’s actually preferable to older formats like WAV . FLAC has built in checksums and can test the integrity of the file afaik and has very good tag support. It's data compression, shrinking the size of a file. But it does not compress audio content. They clearly stated the rollout will be gradual. I am kinda peripherally upset I don't get it yet as a long time 320k ogg vorbis consumer, i also think extremely little is lacking, really.I was sick of waiting for lossless on Premium Family - Australia. I tried many things, but none of them worked. In the end, I removed the iPhone Spotify app, reinstalled it, and got the lossless option. So, I started listening to lossless audio on my iPhone, and while doing so, I opened all my other Spotify apps. After about 3-5 minutes, the lossless audio option became available in other apps as well.
That video has already been addressed in the thread. See #160 and onwards. I think an interesting discussion followed regarding what was addressed in that video.I'm unclear if what he's finding is audible, but I do agree if I'm paying for lossless it best be lossless. I'm currently happy with Tidal/Roon:

Except that lossless doesn't cost any extra from before, so you're not really paying for it.I'm unclear if what he's finding is audible, but I do agree if I'm paying for lossless it best be lossless. I'm currently happy with Tidal/Roon:
