Lossless Listening Arrives on Spotify Premium

It’s in fact compressed, and lossless. And 44.1khz/24bits is technically hi-res.
Even in the original master is 32/384, I wouldn't call a downsample to 24/44 FLAC "compressed"... like u said, it's 50% over Redbook spec and hence "hires".
And honestly it doesn't bother me the least I am not yet getting it, it's been for many years that I have been happy with 320k Ogg Vorbis.

Flac is a compression algorithm, you just can’t get around the fact the data client receives is compressed. However the original samples can be fully extracted from the compressed data, hence it’s lossless unlike MP3 which throws away information during compression. The “lossless” part is independent of the resolution of the material. It can be lossless CD quality 44.1/16 or higher, as long as original samples before compression can be fully recovered.

To the best of my knowledge, only Qobuz has the ability to connect directly to th DAC via ASIO or WASAPI.

So I can curious how did Tidal got bit for bit?

It’s likely to be losslessly compressed FLAC or are you suggesting they’ve downsampled tracks to 44.1khz?

Yes, everything gets resampled to 44.1k if the sample rate of the uploaded files is any higher.

But it's true, technically FLAC is compressed and lossless. Assuming the music files were uploaded at 44.1k you will get a true lossless file.

It would be cool if Spotify allowed arbitrary sample rates, though. Not because higher sample rates are better, but because it would allow people to upload masters without them undergoing any resampling.

At the very least I'd like 48k.

Tidal supported exclusive mode from day 1.
Does it mean that it uses ADIO and thus bypassing Windows Audio?
If you set Windows Audio to 24/96 than everything is resampled to 24/96 and it does a horrible job on that.
I prefer the original sample rate being 16/44.1 or 24/192 but I don't like the conversion.

I just got the lossless option today and enabled it. Sadly my speakers (KEF LS50W version 1) are not supported.

it just uses the Windows audio exclusive mode, no resampling, the device should get original samples at the original sampling rate. WASAPI Exclusive Mode is the official name of this method of connection to audio devices. It’s been a while since I used Tidal, but Google tells me it also supports ASIO, if you have a device with an ASIO driver. In other words Tidal has you fully covered in terms of bitperfect connection to your DAC on. Windows.

Edit: eh, maybe Google AI is lying about ASIO support in Tidal, but I’m lazy to dig deeper.

I just got lossless today as well and was pleasantly surprised to find that my Apple TV 4K is already supported. I hadn’t been able to find anything online about lossless on the atv, so this is mostly for anyone else who’s been looking.

Exclusive mode is not the same thing as ASIO or WASAPI. It has to specifically said ASIO OR WASAPI and you would need to specifically install an ASIO driver.

Lossless just got pushed out to me, testing it out now.

Exclusive mode usually implies WASAPI exclusive mode. I suppose ASIO is also technically “exclusive mode”, but it’s not referred as such.

Looks like I stand corrected.

I do have my DAC ASIO drivers as I am using foobar2000 with it to get BitPerfect DSD.
