Hi all,

I’m considering the Octo Research DAC8 Pro and would love to hear from people who actually use it.

My use case

  • Source/DSP: miniDSP SHD Studio
  • Speakers: 2-way open-baffle
  • Current DACs: two SMSL SU-X units (the DAC8 Pro would replace both)
  • Goal: 4 analog channels from one box, lower clutter, tight channel matching, and stable sync

Questions

  1. Who’s using the DAC8 Pro long-term? Any reliability issues, quirks, or standout positives?
  2. Integration with SHD Studio:
    • What’s the cleanest way to connect for 4 channels (USB vs. digital I/O workarounds)?
    • Any sample-rate/clocking pitfalls, pops, or handshaking hiccups?
  3. Noise floor & channel consistency: Noticeable hiss at the listening position? Channel matching across all 8 outs in real life?
  4. Latency: Any measurable/noticeable latency differences vs. typical stereo DACs when running active crossovers?
  5. Build & component details:
    • Which DAC chips, USB interface, output stage op-amps, clocking, and power supply does the DAC8 Pro use?
    • Are the outputs truly balanced and comfortable with pro-audio input sensitivities?
  6. Compared to dual-DAC setups: If you moved from two stereo DACs (like my SU-X pair) to the DAC8 Pro, did you hear improvements in imaging, coherence, or bass control?
  7. Software/firmware: Any gotchas with drivers (Windows/Mac/Linux), firmware stability, or volume-control behavior across multichannel?

Any measurements, setup tips, or gotchas would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

I'm one of the early purchasers.
1. Functionality, even from new, was never an issue, and only improved over time. Support has been very good, considering the low volume of production, and has on occassion has been stunning... in fact more than I was able to take advantage of (he sent me an upgraded dial, which required minor mods, I never implemented due to health issues.
Pavel sent out firmware upgrade kits (USB) - thanks also to another member here - for those early machines they discovered could not be upgraded easily, worked as claimed, and now does upgrades easily. I'm using it in a 7.1 system, with the mains bi-amped.
I did have some odd power glitches in the first version, but those are long gone - again, Pavel's support has been excellent (for me), though sometimes it takes a while for him to respond. Might be an issue if used in a live theatre setting, but who would do that? The only continuing 'issue' for me is that the remote codes collide with my Apple TV's, but I keep that behind a door most of the time anyway. I do like the tiny Apple remote.

2. I'm not using with SHD. BUT, I AM using a MiniDSP Flex Bal (analog, in this use) on Ch1&2 to provide a two way crossover for my, uh, customized speakers. Even with two DACs and one ADC, the performance was a notable improvement over previous solutions I'd tried. (This also gives me BT connectivity for my mains, though haven't used it yet :)

3. No noticeable hiss under any circumstances, but I'm old, and hearing continues to suffer HF loss... but even back when it was new and hearing was better, no prob.

4. Latency. I was concerned that might be an issue running an analog Flex for crossover and REQ but so far haven't noticed any issues..but have not measured (yet).

5. The technical details are available on other threads. I use 4v balanced outs, and have had no problem with sensitivies across various amps and Flex.

6. Can't help on this.

7. Current HW/SW uses normal drivers (memory fails me on details) - hasn't been an issue for me since the last upgrade. (Running W10 at the moment.)
The power and performance of this DAC, though now a bit older, is still top notch, and capabilities have improved vastly (see custom Room EQ softwares).

Electronically and realiability wise, it has been one of the best devices I've ever owned. (I do use it in a rack with temperature managed ventilation.)
I'm absolutely more than satisfied at the cost/benefit/quality value of this thing...what, 5 years on?

Best wishes!

I got my DAC8 Pro around the beginning of the Covid lockdown. That's almost 5 years, how time flies!

1. My unit is a standard production unit (not an early production one). Waiting time was long, but zero problems encountered after almost 5 years of daily usage.
2. I do not use it with the SHD. But integration through the USB and the AES/EBU connections have been problem-free.
3. Completely silent even with my ear on the speakers. I did not measure channel differences. No noticeable differences by ears.
4. Again, I did not measure latency, but no noticeable differences by ears. I think some members measured it, check the owners' thread.
5. There are 2 big threads in this forum: the Okto DAC8 Pro review thread, and the Okto DAC8 Owner thread. You will find all the info there.
6. No experience, can't help on this.
7. I have been keeping up with all the latest firmware updates. It worked every time as stated in the update manual. Mine is connected to a Windows 10 and a Linux RPi, no issues with drivers (just follow the installation manual). There is an "add on" by fabriceo (a software developper on the Okto DAC8 Pro, I believe, and a member of this forum), that adds EQ functionalities into the device. I have not tried it yet, as a non-technical person I am not sure I understand the whole procedure (which involve downloading software from github?) But it sounds like a great add-on, I will investigate it further.

Check out my signature, I run a minidsp SHD studio into my Okto dac8 pro, has been working great for over 5 years. Do you plan on using more than two subs or need more than 4 channels (limitation of the SHD Studio not the Okto DAC) ? If so then consider the miniDSP Flex HTx and skip the separate DAC. If not it’s a great solution.
  1. Who’s using the DAC8 Pro long-term? Me, 5 years no problems
  2. Integration with SHD Studio:
    • What’s the cleanest way to connect for 4 channels (USB vs. digital I/O workarounds)? I use the two AES/EBU digital outs from the SHD Studio
    • Any sample-rate/clocking pitfalls, pops, or handshaking hiccups? No issues
  3. Noise floor & channel consistency: Noticeable hiss at the listening position? Zero Channel matching across all 8 outs in real life? Perfect
  4. Latency: Any measurable/noticeable latency differences vs. typical stereo DACs when running active crossovers? nothing I've noticed or measured (crossed over to subs)
  5. Build & component details:
    • Which DAC chips, USB interface, output stage op-amps, clocking, and power supply does the DAC8 Pro use?
    • Are the outputs truly balanced and comfortable with pro-audio input sensitivities? Yes
  6. Compared to dual-DAC setups: If you moved from two stereo DACs (like my SU-X pair) to the DAC8 Pro, did you hear improvements in imaging, coherence, or bass control? I like to use the Okto for volume control rather than the SHD, I couldn't do this with two separate DACs ( see my living room stereo where I use two DACs)
  7. Software/firmware: Any gotchas with drivers (Windows/Mac/Linux), firmware stability, or volume-control behavior across multichannel? I have an early unit and upgraded the firmware , since it was an early unit Pavel had to mail me a firmware upgrade kit.
Do also check out the miniDSP Flex HTx might do everything you need in one box (well 2 with a WiiM streamer, but I never liked the SHD for streaming)
