Look Inside JBL Studio 580

I have owned the 580s for a while - I picked them up on a whim during one of the occasional 50% off sales on the JBL website. They have mostly been in one of my secondary systems, but they are currently in my primary system. I pair them with an SVS subwoofer and I cross them over at 70hz.

Regarding the 580s v. 590s: I preferred the 580s to the 590s for the reasons others mentioned here: the 590s are huge and they are very top heavy. They were too big for my room. I also think that because of their size, the height of the 590's tweeter may be suboptimal.

The 580s are very enjoyable to listen to. They are not fatiguing and I don't find the tweeter to be too bright (caveat - I am in my 50s). I have them toed in a bit but not pointing directly at me.

I have cycled through so many speakers in my primary system, most recently KEF R11s and Revel F226Bes. Ultimately I realized that I just enjoy listening to the 580s more. I don't know why, they certainly don't measure better or have better components. For whatever reason, in my room, they are terrific, engaging speakers. Hence the promotion to my primary system. Definitely recommended, and the price is right.
Even the 580s have the tip over warning labels :) 590's tweeter height is 6" higher, more look at the 580's as a bit too low.

Totally agree with you, and yes, I have kept inserting the 580s with HSU VTF-15 sub.
Also, I began with the 530s long ago, and with a sub, these things might be what lots of folks are looking for..small-ish footprint etc.
I was looking for the revels that you mentioned and almost bought a pair but I'm thinking now not being 70 years old and my hearing is not what it was I'm just going to enjoy the music in retirement..
.
Good listening....

I used to have a VTF-3 Mk3 and it was a nice end table that doubled as a subwoofer. That thing was huge.

Agreed that the 580s are also top heavy, but with the 590's added height and weight, I thought it was much more noticeable. The tweeter on the 580s is about 40" off the ground in my room (about 2"-4" above my seated ear level). The 590 would be about 7" higher than that, so not as good for my set up.

I use my 580s as surrounds and have them on some small risers to gain some height, my 590s are at ear level.
