Let's stop calling Class D amplifiers "efficient" when they are not.

I'm still a little confused on if John really wants to focus on the efficiency of an amplifier when it's not amplifying, which he certainly understands has nothing to do with amp topology and more to do with the power supply and whatever parasitic loads are in the box. But alternately, you can look at pro amplifiers and see that as through the years they transition (and a good part of why they transition) from AB lead sleds to class D, they significantly reduce the included heat sinks and in some cases noticeably shrink in size along with the weight loss. This is because (when amplifying, of course) class D generates significantly less heat per watt output, so you can make do with a lot less extra stuff in the box and the amps still survive. This isn't some conspiracy from Big Heatsink Value Engineering.
You've stumbled onto the truth of the matter, which is that John fronts as a tech and old-amp-fetishist but is really and truly part of Big Heatsink. Just as the Saudis are already looking into a future of diminishing oil sales, Big Heatsink sees threat in every little paperback-sized amplifier.

John, it's time to fire up your lobbyists to get your oligarchic meat hooks into the lawmakers. Class D must be crushed!

Was there an actual point to this thread?
Apparently the point was to take a new approach to prosecuting his pet argument that Class D amps are marketed with fraudulent specs. And to sh**post, judging by the fact that so far he hasn't returned to the thread to comment.
 
The OP must have been planning on going on a long walk-about and decided to start this thread before his sabbatical.

The issue is not with the class D amp power dissipation, but with the efficiency of the power supply.
If well designed, at full power (i.e 400W), the power supply will have an efficiency of 90%.
It means that the power supply itself will have to dissipate 40W in addition to the amplifier dissipation itself.

Anyway total efficiency is better than a 400W class A/B amplifier.
But it still needs some cooling.
 
Suspension of disbelief is an important aspect of the cinema experience . . .
If that's unbelievable I can't think what they think of Fast-Furious or Mission-Impossible or the last James-Bond or Transformers or any Marvel movie ever... I absolutely HATE movies that just ride on beyond ridiculous FX animation, no matter how crafty and HD it is done...
