Legitimate example of an amp that "colors" sound?

Almost all SET amps will color sound (Single Ended Triode).
A legitimate example, but is an SET a legitimate amp? I mean some examples have the power of a pocket radio or high powered headphone amp.

Hmmm, interesting point. The tricky task would be defining legitimate! In a small space with extremely sensitive horn loudspeakers, one Watt may be "enough", but in the 21st Century, the average speaker is likely not a horn-based design. So perhaps "legitimate" means capable of creating 78dB levels using an average sensitivity speaker in a room at least 3 x 4 x 2m with a listening position at least 2m from the speaker with no more than 0.1% distortion attributable to the amplifier. Or perhaps agree 5W continuous (greater than 5 minutes) load with 0.1% distortion.

My take is that any amplifier that actually amplifies the signal is a legitimate amplifier. Some are good, some are bad (or even not designed for music reproduction) , some are powerful, some are not, and that applies to both solid state and tubes. There are good SET amps that put out just a handful of watts and will drive suitable speakers to decent levels in quite a large room, although they won't be cheap.

My Violectric V222 has a significantly warmer sound than my RME ADI-2 headphone out, anyone with normal hearing can hear the difference.

Through the same transducers?

i would think this would be easily proveable with modern equipment

we know the yamaha 701 has the alleged 'yamaha' bright sound

we know that some equipment like from Marantz and particularly any English manufacturer has that trad 'warm' sound

with the same speakers in a DBX would people not be able to immediately glean a difference???

LOL

Yamaha from the model lineup change in the mid to late 80s onwards does not have a bright sound.
I took it to be a sarcastic comment myself....so Yamaha used to tweak the upper frequency range somewhat?

Yamaha revamped the entire lineup at that time into a better design. The previous lineup before that one I have experience with by using other peeps gear and trade-ins but in the mid-late-80s I started selling Yamaha and it was not colored.

Guitar amps have extensive coloration. Hifi amps not so much.
