Hello,

I'm looking for an old surround amplifier to use as a multi channel power amp only. Amp needs the following:

-High SINAD
-Lots of power
-7 Channel (or more) analogue in.
- Capable of turning off all processing/adc/dac conversion to analogue RCA in.
-Cheap purchase price.

Do we know of any old, high SINAD surround amps that are reasonably obtainable?

Nord Audio, VTV audio and apollon audio offer cheap 8 channel Class D Hypex NC252 with RCA inputs. Old? Cheap? What does that mean to you?

Amps seem to be cheaper now per W than before and have higher SINAD. Investing in solid made amp is a long term investment so kind of per year cost rather than one time cost. My batch of AB amps in main HT is 15+ years old and still going strong, but SINAD is not great, however practically speaking above 80dB it is difficult to tell a difference - at least for me. Luckily was not born with golden elven ears so can live with most solid gear.

Rotel's 1070 with 80 SINAD and 130w into 8 ohm (have 5 of them) are now between 350-500 EUR per piece used. New Nord Acoustics value line MP NC252 with 150W into 8 ohm and much higher SINAD are around 450 EUR. Not sure why anyone would buy old Rotel that can break tomorrow when new amp is clearly superior and will likely last much longer. It could only work if you get some solid old amp at steal price, but even then it will have low-is SINAD compared to new amps.

Maximum value for SINAD/power.

For example: Denon 4308 is available for under $100.

I am using the 7-channel analog inputs of an Onkyo TX-SR805 to amplify channels 3 through 9 of the preamplifier channel outputs of a Pioneer Elite VSX-LX505 AV receiver. The HDMI output on the Onkyo 805 quit working many years ago but I can still use the amplifier section via the 7-channel analog input. Sound and Vision measured the output power of the Onkyo 805:

Maximum value for SINAD/power.

Oh my, I see you are more knowledgeable about used product prices than me. Sorry I tried to answered now

You get as much as you pay for :) That one is pushing 15 years and might or not work at all - to be seen after you test and measure it. But then $100 obviously does not buy you much nowadays.

The Denon AVR-4308 could be a good choice but agree with above comment that it's a risk due to age. I recently obtained an AVR-3808 for less than $100, but the speaker relays needed to be changed. This involved opening it up and doing some solder work. Once I did that it sounded great. See this other thread--

The AVR-4308 measured well when new, see this post by PENG:

4308 is pretty good for this purpose. Harmon amps of a certain era have a full main in bypass, allowing you to full circumvent the avr section and use it like standalone 5 channel amplifier. The unfortunate part being the 5 channels, but for the price you could by a pair on a lark. The ones I know of are the 520, 7000, and 8000. Can't speak to the sinad however.
