Launch of myHRTF Stereo - New Lifelike Personalized 3D Sound for Headphones

I have great news today:

We now support online testing of our filters with own music: upload any stereo mp3, wav, flac or aac file, select the room and speaker setup and get it filtered in seconds.

You may try it out here for free, you just need your headphones and a ruler.
 
Just finished uploading latest version 1.3:
with this new version the timbre in the treble range is virtually identical to headphones that follow the Harman target curve. That means, when switching between our personalized filters and bypass only the spatial aspects change (wide and deep soundstage in front as is common with loudspeaker playback) but not the tonality.

You can easily check this online here with headphone models that feature a frequency response close to the Harman target, for example Sennheiser HD650/600/6XX, several Dan Clark Audio headphone models and many IEM.

In addition, we support 5 more Dan Clark Audio headphones now: Noire X, Noire X Open, E3, Expanse and Stealth. Coming next will be several Beyerdynamic headphone models.

Hi Philipp, does that mean you don't have quite the same target curve for all your listed headphones in terms of tonality? Just that you mentioned trying it with headphones that are already close to Harman, which leads me to believe you're not EQ'ing all headphones to the same target/tonality?

Hi Rob, thank you for bringing this up. Your initial understanding is correct, all headphones are EQ'ed to the same target. The target depends on your HRTF though (ie. the personalization settings) and is different for direct wave, early reflections and reverberation.

But despite HRTF specific differences, the overall tonality should be similar to the Harman target since this represents the sound of flawless speakers in flawless room acoustics in terms of tonality. Think of it as a perfectly treated listening room in line with international standards: although every individual in this room will exhibit a different frequency response at their ear drums (caused by their individual HRTF), they all will agree that the room acoustics is flawless.

Hence my comment regarding headpones that follow the Harman target curve out of the box: if you switch our filters in and out (bypass) on our webpage, there is virtually no change in tonality. In principle, you could do the same with any other headphone model but you would need to EQ it to Harman in bypass (only) for this kind of comparison. In other words, headphone models that deviate significantly from the Harman target curve do sound different in tonality when switching our filters in and out on our webpage.

Does this make sense to you?

Yes, that makes sense Philipp. I'm glad you explained it because otherwise it read that you had slightly different targets for your various headphones (which you don't) but now I know why you worded it that way. Are you gonna be porting the same tonality targets into the Surround version when you launch it, or undecided yet?

Yes, the tonality target is the same for all channels. All channels do sound different though just like a flawless speaker in flawless listening room sounds different depending on its position relative to you.
