Many readers may know Larry Crane, Jackpot Recording, and TapeOp Magazine. On the equipment side today, I would say TapeOp is completely subjective, not measurement-based. In their earlier days, they publiched DIY designs, including microphones and their forums were DIY-oriented. Jackpot came in with the great lo-fi recording movement of the 1990s.

For the last several years, TapeOp has been doing artist, producer, and engineer interviews. This is a compilation. It would be a good companion to listening sessions of the recordings discussed. The print magazine is free, and the back issues may be on the Internet for free.

I've subscribed to Larry Cranes magazine, Tape Op, for like forever. It's a great read for keeping up on new studio-based gear, but as you mentioned, the reviews are generally subjective. Not really the audiophilic 'creamy highs and punchy lows' kind of crap, more like what it's like to use the gear in a studio.
