It turns out that MSI, renowned for their hi-spec gaming computers, works with Dynaudio for their output DAC:

Thought that was very interesting! This model appears to have 2 1\8" headphone jacks, one of which goes through the Dynaudio dac. Does anyone have experience with these kinds of hifi/computer collaborations?

In general, any advice from computer folks about which laptops to consider? I know there are lots of folks here on ASR who also do music production, and it would be great to have some recommendations about machines that would work well for both applications.

Thanks so much!

just about any laptop will serve you well for audio production. Like old anekdot about music production:
- Is it true that producer A uses computer to filter the voice of his singer B?
- Nah, you think of producer A too high. He uses calculator!

My advice is to simply ignore consumer oriented laptops as these are very hard to do maintenance on and very often poorly built. Look at Dell's Latitude or Precision, if you want better stuff; well, not comparable to the older Latitudes or IBM Thinkpads with magnesium/aluminium rollcages but it's still "less worse".

Hi Bravomail, when using a DAC, does the internet signal coming in pass into the laptop CPU and then to the portable DAC. Or is that signal affected by the quality of the laptop such as amplifiercation or filtered in some way.

Where did you find that? I don’t see that mentioned anywhere. Besides, Dynaudio makes speakers, not DACs.

And if you Google the thing, the first thing popping up is how bad the speakers are

In any case, if companies market with this:

You know it’s bullshit.

Yes it may have an ESS DAC. But for a headphone the amplifier is also a significant factor, and there is nothing mentioned about it.

Better just buy an external combo DAC/amp of actual quality. They are not expensive.
