I am considering buying the ls60 but due to toddlers I am skeptical regarding the missing grille. Can you tell me how delicate the tweeters and woofers are?
When my children were toddlers they were fascinated with pushing in on the drivers in my speakers, which had not grills. I became quite adept at using things (e.g., tape and/or a paper clip) to pop dust caps back out.I am considering buying the ls60 but due to toddlers I am skeptical regarding the missing grille. Can you tell me how delicate the tweeters and woofers are?
LS60's for over a year now, along with 5 grandchildren and 5 rowdy dogs that visit with them. Knock on wood, but no issues this far. There is enough to keep them occupied, and on the one or two occasions when one did want to touch the speakers a quick "tut-tut" was all it took. I am more worried about the party antics of their adult parents!I am considering buying the ls60 but due to toddlers I am skeptical regarding the missing grille. A modified Oppo 203 with VanityHD board(wich has 7.1 digital out via coax) could be a solution. If you can feed them via the S/PDIF input (up to 24/192PCM), they can be treated just like regular powered speakers, albeit in pairs.
Ah. You want them to be a complete multichannel system. That's another story.
i did the following tried different distances to the back wall and adjusted the toe in to my liking. With a laser pointer at the top of the speakers I listen slightly of axis as recommended with coaxials .
I think the LS60s are meant to be sounding best without any toe-in at all, from the on-axis measurements I’ve seen they have a fairly large treble boost. But the “to my liking” part is of course the most important thing to get right.
What a nice looking home you have.
A little toe-in improved the imaging for me as well.so for some reas there was not that much solid phantom center with no toe in ?
Welcome yes they are fantastic, hopefully the electronics inside of them last at least ten years!
just so you don't feel crazy these pictures were taken on two different days when i was trying different positions for that big SVS cylinder sub.
been running the LS60 for a couple weeks now and really enjoy them. the AVR in the picture isn't hooked up, i'm running them with an HDMI straight from the TV for TV and movies, and listening to music with Spotify Connect. they work great with the TV, i set them up to power on when the TV powers on and my TV remote controls the volume. Getting the stereo downmix from the 4K player to work was a little trickier, but ultimately i found i needed to disable eARC on the TV, now movie discs work great. spotify connects quickly and i haven't had any drop outs. after spending months (years maybe?) hemming and hawing and reading horror stories about issues with KEF electronics i'm pleased to find everything is working flawlessly (so far).
not going to try and describe the sound myself, see Erin's excellent youtube review, his experience is the same as mine. the speakers are really just a joy to listen to. the only thing i'll comment on is the bass in my room. you can kind of get an idea of the size and layout of my room from the pictures, pretty big room with various openings to other rooms. as such, i don't get a ton of pressurization from the speakers, nor would i expect to. but i can "hear" every bass note without issue, and there is a satisfying midbass punch with well recorded/mixed analog kick drums and pretty much any electronic music. beyond that the imaging is awesome, vocals are firmly locked in the center, very similar to my LS50 Metas which I run in another smaller room.
overall, if you enjoy the KEF sound, you will love the LS60, though if you crave bass pressurization and have a large or unwieldy room you may consider a subwoofer or two.
i sit about 12 feet away and the speakers get incredibly loud. the absolute max i've had them is at 65 on the volume and i was pushing 95db at that, which is my personal max for volume before i get uncomfortable. i'm typically an 85db listener.
i've been really impressed with the app, particularly the "expert" mode adjustment options. very slick and easy to use, i'm still experimenting with various configurations but have generally settled on not using wall mode at all (meaning bass is kept at the maximum setting) and phase correction on. it sounds great with phase correction on or off, but i do think the sound is a little more coherent with it on.
beauty is in the eye of the beholder but i think the speakers are gorgeous to look at. i've been at this hobby a long time and have decided that if i'm going to be spending hours sitting and listening to music i might as well like the look of the speakers i'm staring at, and as such it's worth spending the extra money to have speakers that are aesthetically pleasing to me.
at some point these may find their way into my regular listening room. they replaced a SVS Ultra Towers and center channel, and sonically are better in almost every way than those, but when watching movies i do miss having a center channel i can bump up the volume on.
final point, really impressed with the thought that went into the box these came in. you can find unboxing videos on youtube, but basically the were extremely easy to unbox, i just shimmied the speaker sideways right out of the box, very easy.
anyway KEF rules.
I have both but I don't know how to quantify "close."Is the LS60 close at all to the Blade Meta sound?
