KEF LS60 Room Correction Showdown: REW MMM vs. Wiim Ultra—A Data-Driven Analysis

This is a great thread, attacking exactly what has been on my mind since I got a set of LS60s and a SB3000 around xmas. My office is really dark at the tweeter height with bookshelves, but two stories so there are a lot of modes to deal with. Something I screwed up with my first round of corrections (that I learned from this thread) is that I used 1/6 smoothing in REW's RTA, I need to go back a redo the sub PEQ with more accurate centers. I have a used RME ADI-2 Pro coming that I'll use as my pre-amp, PEQ, and headphone amp. I hope it does everything I need.

A2.4. How should I set the speakers if I prefer to adjust the volume on an external equipment (preamplifier, streamers/multi-room systems) rather than through the KEF Connect App?

In the KEF Connect App:

1. In Settings, go to “Volume”, change “Volume Display” to “-/+”
2. Select the relevant source input.
3. Change the volume to 71. The source selection is now set to “Unity gain”.

How did you determine this?
It´s mentioned for the LSX II as well (in the manual). Funnily enough I´ve set the volume of my LSX always at fixed level 70 in the past because I noticed the increasing noise after that level. So it corresponds to my experience - I just have to turn it up to 71 :D

Subjectively, the difference in my room is night and day. With prominent peaks at 20 Hz, 60 Hz, and in the 100–250 Hz range, the LS60 struggles to perform at its full potential. The sound becomes boomy, with the exaggerated bass masking the clarity of the midrange and treble. KEF’s goal of delivering a neutral speaker that reproduces music as the artist intended is admirable, but the lack of a built-in PEQ to address room-related issues is disappointing. Without the ability to tame these room modes, the LS60’s otherwise excellent performance is hindered, and it feels like a missed opportunity for KEF to provide a more complete user experience.

I think this is in error and was carried over from the LS50W specs. It will be updated eventually.

Great tread :) thanks for sharing.

As a sidenote I use the WiiM Pro + and use the LS60 itself for subwoofer crossover , but manual EQ in WiiM after measuring with REW .

The WiiM is my only source and I use KEF's internal volume control, fixed volume in the WiiM ( remeber to set the volume limit to something sensible if you use EQ ) .

I can not praise REW enough by just measuring and adjusting the sub crossover ( separate high pass and low pass and levels in KEF ) you get better results than accepting the default settings for their own sub's .I have dual KC92's

And then 4 PEQ's below 200Hz, a slight shelf at 250Hz to boost bass a bit to taste and -0,25 dB at KeF's treble control and I'm very happy.
I only cut the peaks I don't boost any dips btw.

Using the multi sweeps resulted in noticeably distorted bass for me (only using 40-300khz),changed the target curve from harman to flat and in my view all is restored in the world, going to try my umik soon with it and see if it changes the response for the better.

Agreed.

Understood. Nonetheless, when I put the point to KEF, I was told that they will be updating the information.
Understand, but sometimes some KEF representative are not in sync with facts, one in USA said that KEF speakers don't sound good with class D amps, although KEF are using class-D amps on their own speakers.

Not "some KEF representative" but the most knowledgable individual in the company about such things. I am loath to quote/ascribe since this was in a personal exchange and, to be frank, it is a trivial point for all but a very few.

Ok, thanks! If that’s accurate, it’s a bit disappointing, as I based my purchase of the LS60 on this information. I understand that my use case is likely in the minority since most users rely on the built-in streaming of the LS60. However, I would expect accurate information in the manual from a company like KEF. Additionally, I really wish they would implement a 10-band PEQ or a room correction feature.

Only for time alignment between subwoofer and speaker, not for measurement for RC

I am just learning about my new Ultra. Can you please point me to documentation about which mic to use for each application. Thanks
