Kali Audio IN-8v2 (Second Wave) 3-Way Studio Monitor Review

I am a big fan of Kali's models for bang for the buck. I own a number of them (LP-8, IN-5 and LP-UNF) and use in my home. I would prefer Genelec or Neumann but they are typically multiples of the price. And I've heard most of the models multiple times at work. Subjectively, if you want something that will give you 85% performance for a fraction of the price they are worth considering.
I probably would have been into those other speakers before I got tinnitus. I'd also love to find warm holographic speakers. The JBL 305's had that type of sound for me. I really loved some of The Doors songs on it like Hello I love you. So maybe the Kali's might do that if they are a better version of the JBL's.

When I was a kid there was a place I went to that I can't remember, but they had a small 4 speaker setup (no speakers behind me), 2 speakers where at chest level and the other 2 were about 3-4 inches higher than my head and the holographic sound I heard just amazed me and I've been trying to find that sound my entire life.

But in the meantime if I could find an incredible set of warm sounding speakers that would be great. But like I said, even if I buy another speaker, I will probably still get some JBL's in the next month or so if JBL has a nice sale this holiday. I did see the LSR 308s for sale locally for 200 a pair that I was going to pick up, but I saw a few posts saying that the amplifiers had more hiss, so I guess I'll just wait and see if theres a sale on some of the new JBL's.

What are the Kalis missing in comparison? What's that last 15%?
Tighter bass, cleaner sound, technically better highs but as I get older I will probably lose that ability to hear them.

It depends which two models you are comparing. I try to do a lot of comparison test here and my sons and friends participate.. They're in their 20s and one neighbor early 40s. I do level match it, and although it's not blind. I've been told many times they don't know which speaker is playing. Because they're right next to each other. I haven't had the opportunity to do that with Kali vs. Genelec or Neumann but have done that against JBL.

Depending which models you're comparing and whether you're using a sub or not, I might choose one over the other. For instance the 8020 versus the LP-INF without a sub I would go with the kali. The better bass extension would be the difference. With a sub I would prefer the Genelec. The LP-INF would be a tougher choice against the KH80 without a sub. The LP-INF still extends lower but not by as much of a difference.

If you go up the chain and compare models with bigger woofers, I definitely think Genelec and Neumann win but how much better for the price? If price is not a consideration I would definitely take an 8040, 8341, kh120ii, or kh150 over an LP-6/8 and IN-5/8 without a sub. Compared to the 8030 I might go with one of the Kali if not using a sub. That would be a little tougher choice.

Basically, bas is such a big part of our hearing pleasure. I think once a speaker can get down to about 40 HZ that's pretty good for most music. If it can go lower all the better of course. Speaker which only go down to ~55 Hertz or higher don't sound as good without a sub. Not factoring volume level, I would rather have a small speaker with a sub then a larger speaker without one. The sub allows for placement flexibility while still playing the lower octaves. YMMV on what you prefer.

Im our comparisons the JBL308 and Kali LP-8 were extremely close. It could definitely come down to aesthetics. The women that were listening nicknamed the 308 the Darth Vader speaker.

With the 305 and 306 everyone was more definitive for the LP-6. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. I do think the JBLs have slightly more hiss, and that might be a factor if you're sitting very close like at a desk but I don't think it would be a big issue further away. I hear the JBL 308 quite often as we use them for rental speakers. All these models work very good for that price point!

Did you ever compare it to the in-8 v2? The 308s are going for 400 a pair and I'm struggling not to buy it at that price as a 2nd set of speakers compared to 1k for the Kali's. But that damn hiss... I had the 305s and always heard it and I'm guessing the 308s would probably be worse. I really miss that JBL sound, I loved it besides the soundstage getting wonky at times.

But..that...hiss... I would have easily paid another 100 bucks for a better amp on those speakers to eliminate the hiss.

I have had the iN-8 out for measurements and did a quick comparison against the in-5 but not against the 308. There's not a big difference between the IN-5 and the IN-8. The IN-8 goes 2hz lower. The big advantage is it can play louder. I think the IN series is a nice step up from the LP series or the JBLs. The big difference to me is in the mid-range.

One comparison we did for reference was the IN-5 against the kef R3. Everyone chose the IN-5 but that was another close comparison. I had the opportunity to get the R3 for the same price as the IN-5 and I decided to go with the IN-5. It had better dynamics to me. We also compared the R3 versus the R3 meta and that was split on which people preferred.

Here's some pictures. By the way they're not set up like this when we're listening just for the pictures to get some comparison of the sizes.

Did the Kali's have a similar sound to the JBLs? I really love that JBL sound, not sure if that's how monitors usually sound since those are the only monitors I've ever heard. Yeah I may need that extra DB since I'm still debating on a desk setup and another Left/Center/Right movie setup where I'm limited to bookshelf speakers.

How do the Kef's sound? Are they warm/bright?? I just started reading about them a day or so ago.I didn't read much into them since the speakers seem small that I'm not sure if they would be good for movies or if they are mainly for music. Still need to read up on all that.

The Kali and JBL are similar and both are relatively neutral. Kali's founders used to work for Harman which owns JBL. When Samsung bought Harman some of the speaker designers left and started Kali. So, the designers of Kali were very familiar with JBL and probably use similar design philosophy. They also knew they needed to build something to compete with the popular JBL models.

Kef R3 is similar in that it is a neutral speaker. The Kali was more dynamic with punchier bass and Kef for lack of a better term more smooth. I am using them without a sub so the better bass gave a richer, fuller sound. Kef's fit and finish is definitely nicer. The women from the listening area thought the Kali looked better, they didn't like the shinier finish of the Kef. But, when near the speaker it is easy to see the Kef looks better built. And it should, it is more than twice the price.

sir, is that not kali sm5 in 2nd pic? i am confused since you mention kali in 5 and lp6 and lp unf and you did not mention having sm5.

did you compare those with in 5 for your audience and what are your impressions. i find it interesting that erin was not so impressed with them, especially considering the money .. 1 costs 2500 dollars..

dam i wish there was a youtube channel with people comparing speakers and general nonaudiophilic audience voting. that would be interseting.

Yes, that is the SM-5. For my work I take speakers home to measure them. I do the measurements outside. But I do get a little chance to play with them. I thought the SM-5 was a step up from the IN-5 and the R3. But the SM-5 wasn't in comparisons with everybody over, it had to back before that could happen. Personally, I liked it a lot. I would definitely take the SM-5 over those two speakers. I'd have to compare it next to a Genelec to give you that impression. I haven't had that opportunity. This was the SM-5 with the external Lea amp, not the version with the amps built in.

I seen Erin's review and in my comparison, I thought there was an obvious difference when I could switch between the speakers side by side. My initial impression was this could give Genelec a run for the money. I could be wrong though, because memory is different then direct comparison.

It is good that I get to bring home speakers and test them. With the information from their on and off axis response is how we come up with acoustic treatment plans for rooms. We don't have a lot of inventory at work, and usually just order what we need for a given installation. We keep some speakers for rental applications, the LSR 308 is one we have on hand for this. I can bring those home anytime. Currently, speakers that I own are the following.

My family room has the Paradigm MilleniaOne in a 2.1 configuration with a Paradigms Element 10 sub used with a short throw projector seen on the picture. It used to be the Kali 6.2 but I liked the Element better. These are also some of my favorite small speakers, they have gotten more expensive over the years unfortunately. But they definitely need a sub. I'm using these with the Anthem MRX-SLM receiver. BTW, this system replaced the Kef LSX II with Kali sub. I definitely like these more than the Kef.

My living room has the Kali IN-5 for two channel and general listening. It is not connected to any type of video. These are my current favorite speakers in my home.

My theater room has Kali LP-8 for the front three speakers below the 130" 2.4 screen. The surrounds are the Paradigm Surround 3. The back is pro P65-IW series in wall speaker and 4 overheads are the Pro P80-A, with Anthem MRX-1140. Oh, two Paradigm Defiance X-12 subs. This is my temporary theater. I had a bigger one in the other area of the basement. But I am redoing that room as I'm getting ready to sell my house in the spring.

Ps. I forgot I have the LP-UNF in my office. I did have the IN-UNF in there but I had trouble getting the bass correct with my setup and how I was trying to place the bass module with the monitor. That can be a nicer system with the right setup and the mid-range is definitely better than the LP-UNF. I still have the IN-UNF I will probably sell it eventually with other stuff I want to get rid of when I move.

Yea I just care about the sound. Thats a bit of the thing I worry about, even if they sound better or somewhat similar I still want that warm JBL sound. When I had the 305s I found myself starting to listening to old songs from the 50s,60s,70s. While the sound is completely opposite ends, the JBL's reminded me of my Audeze LCD-2c headphones, where the music sounded completely different than I've heard from the rest of my audio gear. I want that JBL warm/cozy sound but that hiss just sucks, but I also don't want to end up with another pair of speakers like The Fives & the buyer that I was selling my Fives to bailed out so that sucks.

I should probably just get the in-8 v2's today. Now that I'm recalling the JBL's, I could have sworn that at times there felt like there was a blank spot in the sound & now I'm wondering if the in-8 would fix that. I know they would be overkill on my desk but I am curious as to how they would sound on there.

Although like I mentioned, maybe I should just buy the in-8 v2s first since I already know how the JBLs sound.

Is there any place local that you can go listen to them? I don't know if you're in New England area? A little bit of a pain but you can also order them from some place that has a good return policy.

Yeah the few I checked didn't have Kali in stock. I was literally just about to buy them a few minutes ago anyways but I didn't realize the markets were crashing so hard with everything going on. So I'm going to actually hold off a bit from buying them and see if I can find a store around Southern CT that doesn't involve me going to NYC to go hear these.

I'm just a pain in the ass with specific sound signatures or whatever cause I have tinnitus which has caused a personality shift and loss of enjoyment in just about everything. It's why I harp on energetic, holographic, warm, etc over super accurate, clinical or bright speakers. I'm trying to get a speaker with a sound to excite me or put me into the song and movie in the hopes that it helps me enjoy things a bit more.

My tinnitus isn't from hearing loss either, early 40s with the hearing of an 18 year old but the tinnitus has actually made me even more sensitive to sounds, combined with my big ears lol

I got my in-8 v2's yesterday but it's a bit of a mix. My nephew wanted to have a movie day watching King Kong movies so I tried to quickly set up everything but the HDMI cable(I had to hook up my macbook pro to the tv) seemed to cause a good amount of noise.. we still got through the movie since it got masked through out most of it. Without the HDMI cable theres only a tiny bit of noise and hooking it up to my PC also has some noise to it. So I'm sure I may have to get something or change the cables to TRS.

Movie wise it did have a big sound, it did manage to throw some sounds around here or there, unlike all my other speakers, these didn't need a center channel. They had a very nice soundstage, projected sounds a bit beyond the speaker on the sides and sounds like King Kong roars sounded MUCH bigger than any other system I had. That is one thing I noticed is that everything sounded much bigger. Nothing sounded harsh at all, dialogue was incredibly easy to understand and not muffled at all, especially at the parts where the bass ramped up, the Kali's handled them with no problem and I loved that it didn't muffle any other sound out. I wasn't even able to hook up the sub but these had enough bass to make the movie very satisfying. Sure we could have used the sub but it had enough bass to hold us over. Volume isn't a worry either,I only had these about 40% volume and they were loud enough. It did a pretty good job in that TV room which has sucked for most movie watching when hooking up speakers.

I also hooked it up at my 8 foot desk in my room and yes, these are extreme over kill. Even though these are massive on my desk they seem so transparent as if they aren't even there. It's like the sound is projected 4-5 inches in front of the speaker and once again a nice phantom center. Pin point precision and like others have said the sonic fidelity is awesome on these. Compared to other speakers I've heard it's like the sound is in perfect focus and lined up right so the speakers just seem to vanish.

In my room I hooked them up to my macbook, put them on my 2 1/2 foot tall stands, 3-4 feet away from me and sat down at my small floor table. (I don't use a sitting desk anymore, I usually sit on the ground and have a floor table). These speakers are fantastic in this setup and I love this setup the most. Spread out at about 6-7 feet apart it is close to having an almost life size sound. Like the TV room the sound gets huge again and voices have some nice sound to them. It even gets a nice reverb in the room and I LOVE listening to live music on these. They once again project the sound forward so the speakers are not the star of the show most of the time. Depending on the music or song it can sound like its 6 inches to a few feet in front of the speaker and the phantom center is just excellent, its like a wall of sound with forward projection to it. Out of all the setups I love this one the most. I was wondering if sitting down and having the speakers up a bit higher might ruin the sound (maybe you might lose a bit of clarity that could be fixed by aiming them down a bit?) but it reminded me of a movie theater like experience or experiencing the music as if you were in the crowd. The height and size of everything to me made it sound great for that setup.

The bad:

Not sure if this is bad but they do need to be eq'd for me. The bass can be thin at times so just a tiny bit of boost around the 40-55hz area is nice. To me it really brings out the bass in the speakers. I'm not talking about basshead levels either ,just a tiny bit more level on the eq. I also found that the low end could be a bit lacking as well at times. It also did remind me a tiny bit at times of that home theater box bass of the 90s were it sounded like the 63hz was where the bass was set and at least for me I tend to hate that area for whatever reason, it just doesn't sound appealing to me.

The highs at 45-50% start to get shrill sounding to me.

Compared to the JBL 305s, I still miss the JBLs..the Kali had the type of bass I thought it was going to have, not 100% but its still there. These sound like ported speakers to me where as the 305 sounded sealed. The Kali's kill it in sound quality and movies compared to the 305s & the 305s also have boomy bass at times. BUT I was looking for that JBL warm sound, even the 305s sounded like they had more low end bass vs these in-8's. Electronic music was way more fun to listen to on the 305s, same with classic rock. JBL's are more laid back, like fun speakers to listen in a blanket drinking hot coffee on a snowy day. The 305s are the white mid 2000's macbook of being like a warm playful computer while the Kali's are the new larger macbook pros. Hope that could give a sense of the difference I feel between these two.

I did get a bit over excited with these speakers and I need to debate on what to do with them. I was hoping the RCA's would have been good enough but now I need to see if the HDMI cable is always going to give me problems with this setup no matter what I hook it up to or what. Even though I think the Kali's are on another level of SQ, I think the 306's would be perfect for my desk if the amp hiss wasn't there.. all this is such a pain in the ass lol

The last thing (hope I don't get too personal) is that I do suffer from tinnitus that isn't caused by hearing loss. It has had a devastating effect on my personality and enjoyment of just about everything in life. Whatever it's done to my brain, it hasn't been fun. I rarely listen to music anymore and these speakers do have me listening to music and getting much more into movies. The setup isn't the best looking when it's on my stands in my room nor look the best just having the speakers in that spot or against the wall when not in use (I actually hate buying stuff since I want to move one day and it makes me feel more locked down and more cluttered). But these do have that energy to make me start to feel motivated which is really nice. I also don't enjoy my Klipsch The Fives anymore with movies.. I hooked them up again today real quick for the family since they wanted to watch A nightmare before christmas and now they sound like TV speakers to me.

Sorry for the long writeup. I tend to talk a lot :)

^I get noise from my V2 as well, but only if it's plugged into something attached to my computer, or on the same circuit. Almost no self noise though. Trying to figure out if there's something that filters the electrical noise better like a power strip or compact conditioner I can fit under my standing desk.

Thanks for the nice write up of your impressions! It is nice to hear peoples' opinions on equipment. One of the reasons I often tell people to listen to speakers and don't go by what others say is the best. You have to decide what you enjoy the most.

Some comments on your impressions. Bass problems in general are often room/layout dependent. If you are sitting in nulls it will sound lacking at certain frequencies, if sitting in peaks it will sound boomy at certain frequencies. The seating/speaker placement has a ton to do with this. It is one of the many reasons to use a sub. Often the best location for mids and highs is rarely the best location for bass. So having placement felexibility with a sub helps a lot. And using 2 or more subs is about getting more consistent bass in the whole seating area. It is not about more bass. Without measurements tough to know what was giving your impression.

The highs with that speaker can be a bit shrilling if you toe them in and are aimed directly that towards your listening position. This happens with many coaxial speakers due to their design. If this is how you had them set up, aim them more into the room than directly at you. You will have to experiment and decide which placement works best.

Computers in general are notorious for introducing noise. The question is the noise caused by the computer or from the speaker itself. Tough to tell without testing it. I have my IN-5s connect to a Wiim Pro Plus and I hear a little air noise (not really hiss) from them if I am withing a foot of them. Defnitely not audible further than that. This is also true of the LP-8's connected to my Anthem 1140 receiver. However, I don't hear anything at all from the LP-UNF connected to an iMac with my ear right next to them. Every situation is different. A good solution might be to try a WiiM Ultra connected through the TV's ARC/eARC connection with the computer connected to one of the TV's HDMI port. That might help or possibly a USB interface for the computer.

Tinnitus does suck. My wife suffers from that at times and has Meniere's disease. She says she gets it more if she eats a lot of salty foods. She also has terrible hearing loss. She has lost a good amount of high frequency hearing in one ear and a significant hearing loss in low frequencies in the other ear with more milder high frequency loss. One of the side effects of Chemo is her cause. Plus she used to play bass which I doubt helped. I joke its conveneient that one of your ears cuts out the male vocal range.

Thanks again for the write up. I talk a lot too, so no problem giving the details.

@Ellebob Yeah what I try to do is remember/write down how speakers I've listened to sounds and if I find any reviewers that have listened to those same speakers I see if they are the same or complete opposite from me. With the JBL vs Kali, I guess it will just be if I want the JBL sound I have to buy JBL, thats it. I know we can't go off audio tests on youtube but I was right in detecting the type of sound from the video. Although I am not upset with the decision if I do keep the Kali's. For the JBL's I would only use them for my desk setup since they aren't good for big rooms nor for movies. I think the 306's would be perfect for my desk and maybe I'll get lucky and find a connection for my PC that will kill the hiss as much as possible. It just kills me with the noise at times, moreso with the JBL's. With JBL it's like "Hear how your music is supposed to sound with our excellent speakers while our amp has built in tinnitus for the speakers!"

You most likely nailed the shrill problem. I did toe them in with my room setup and with the movies I didn't do that and didn't notice any shrill problems at the higher volumes I was playing at. I watched the first 10 minutes of that F1 movie that just came out and the Kali's were so nice, especially with the fireworks. Hearing the fireworks exploding on the Kali's was a treat, the bass on them is that nice cinematic home theater super tight bass ping where it gives explosions texture in the sound, it made the movie way more enjoyable than when I watched them with The Fives. The Kali's really suck me into movies which is what I was looking for. I could imagine an entire Kali Audio setup for home theater would make for a very fun time. At times even at 4-5 feet away the Kali's can throw the sound almost to my ears, making for a nice 3d sound.

Even today I was watching random stuff just to see how the Kali's sound. Watching live shows like comedy events or even people just giving talks on stage while hearing the crowd and the way the sound is on stage really helps with the vibe of the video, for me it just feels more engaging. I'm not exactly sure what to call that type of sound cause it's not like The Fives are bad sounding speakers at all but theres that sound difference of how The Fives sound (and all the other speakers that also sound good with that "sound) vs the way Kali Audio and other speakers present sound. Sorry if others say this word in reviews but I can't stand when I read reviews ,especially from these more popular reviewers where all the only way they can describe the sound is by saying the bass is "crisp".

I may have another buy for my Klipschs...I will probably go buy the 306s, even though the 308s are so tempting at that price but I keep reminding myself that others have said the hiss is much worse on the 308s vs the 305/306s. Although I also am wondering how the smaller Kali speakers would sound. I love it when the speakers seem to fade away and the sound hovers around them, getting that holographic sound.

Sorry to hear about the wife, Tinnitus sure does suck along with all the other illnesses! I hate that unless we get some miracle breakthrough we just have this stupid sound with us till the day we die. I really wish the focus of AI would be in the medical fields instead of the art/music AI we are seeing right now. These health issues suck.

You are not too far away. I have the 308s at work I can take and I have both the LP-UNF the IN-UNF at home if you want to try them. The current price on the 308s is a very good deal.

I find it tough with many reviewers that seem like they have a book of adjectives and have to use all the adjectives in their reviews. Unfortunately, I have no idea what having a velvet sound means. That was from an actual reviewer. I could say something is cucumbery for the sound, what does that mean? Some common descriptions I understand, is the speaker bright, boomy bass, Etc.

My best friend is a wine connoisseur, and he sniffs the wine, swirls it in his mouth, tastes it, and can pick out all these flavors from it. He teaches classes at a University on wine. (They didn't have classes like that when I went to college). But what he says to people, it doesn't matter about all these attributes. What matters is whether you like the wine or not. I think there's a lot of truth to that with speakers. If you find them engaging and drawing you into the material. Then they are good speaker for you.

If you like the JBL sound, you should get it. I'm not sure there's much you can do about the hiss though. I can see how that would be bothersome.

I'm really bummed out..got another converter box, optical no luck, e-arc made it much worse. I also feel like these LG tv's that cost so much also are pieces of crap in some ways. I was really hoping that the converter box would have done the trick but no luck.

Now I'm thinking of returning these speakers cause if I can't use them for movies they are almost useless. I guess the only thing to get is the bluetooth audio reciever.. I'd have to use my macbook pro to hook up to the tv and make it play the movies and sound with. But I have no idea if bluetooth audio will be ok since I've never used it.
