Just wanted to share some insight on the resurrection of Deputy Marshal Raylan Givens in City Primeval. I'm a fan of westerns, and enjoyed the modern day theme of the original Justified, which ended 2015. So when I first heard of the new iteration, my heart sank with thoughts of how they should have left it alone.

Much to my delight, the first season of City Primeval (2023) didn't violate any of the old story lines. It had loads of familiar references & it was a pleasure to hear the smooth talkin' Marshal again. If you enjoyed the original series, then City Primeval is an enjoyable 8 episodes. That said, the 1st season ended with a setup to restart a closed thread from the original. It was just a brief bit at the end, and didn't impact the close of the first season... just setting up for the 2nd (which I'll likely pass on)

Had I not been familiar with the original show... it would have struck me as too much contrast, with over the top characters. Not good nor bad....

i finished this one and its a nice return for people who saw the original

its a pale carbon copy... i mean there's a lot of the old tropes but its nice to see Oliphant do his thing

it clearly does not have the complex dynamics of Goggins, that Dewey character, Jere Burns, Ava Crowder but its not a bad way to spend some tv time

the old show had you thinking a fair bit - this one doesnt but not every show can be as good as the original Justified

It's an adaptation of an Elmore Leonard series that doesn't have Raylan Givens as the main character. I enjoyed it although not as much as the original which was based on Leonard's Givens series. Leonard set a lot of his books in Detroit. In many ways the city was the main character.

the closest comparison i would have is the new Dexter New Blood revival... 'new' Justified is nowhere near as bad but at the same time I LOVED seeing Michael C Hall... "do his thing"

and so I feel like i'm more optimistic than OP - i would watch S2 of Primeval no issues

Please post back after season 2 (if it happens). I'll be curios for your feedback. In particular, how they develop Boyd's story.

Ava's thread was sewn up nicely in the original. For me, that's not something to revisit. In my minds eye, the Boyd part of their lives was over. Seeing her or the boy sucked back into the turmoil would crush the comfortable illusion of her escape into normalcy. So long as they're not part of the new series.... it'll get a viewing, albeit after good folk like yourself verify Ava & son are still happily ever after ;)
