I would call a back so weak it can't keep straight while lifting a serious health issue, unless you are 90 lol
Seriously, if you are that weak in your 40ies, how do you expect to have a funtional body when you get older?
Something to consider when purchasing HiFi. Buy large speakers and heavy Class A amps so you get your dose of muscle stimuli.
-Remember, if it jiggles, it's fat.

Perhaps amirm could enlist the assistance of a young, local audio enthusiast for selected testing, in exchange for whatever unwieldy speakers (like these?) are clogging up his space.

Those 'resonances' in the distortion plot cannot be overlooked especially taking the premium appeal of the JBL brand into account. Maybe it is an individual fail of this specimen, but without comparison to a better one I write this type off.

Anecdotally I detect those linear/non-linear 'hot spots' and feel reminded of the artifical origin of the sound. Very distracting on the long run.

It is the same as this full grill. The only way it would be different is if it also impacted the woofer which it did not.
Good, I understand what you mean now, thanks.

Depends how heavy the thing you're lifting is (& how awkward it is). I used to do weight training using free barbell weights for nearly 10yrs (squats/deadlifts, etc), if you're not strong your back will be the first thing to fail when you're lifting an awkward object from the floor. I definitely find that now that I'm not doing this type of weight training anymore, if I'm lifting something heavy & awkward in everyday life now - it really pays to have a strong back (which I don't have so much now) along with flexibility.

What are the things to look for there to find a good sample?

Personally, I would wait until an ASR member reaches out and has a genuine untouched pair and sends/delivers you a sample to test.

You'll pay way too much for even a single NS-1000M and there's no guarantee it hasn't been messed with or had drivers replaced. They were made over such a long run (~20 years) that you could get an ancient unit with hardened surrounds or a newer unit with magnet pole piece corrosion which is a nightmare to deal with.

I looked on Ebay in the US, and there are a bunch of what I believe are scam listings- pictures lifted from Japanese sites, at prices too good to be true from sellers with zero feedback.

Much as I'd love to see an NS-1000M on the Klippel, I think you are doing the right thing, mainly testing speakers people can actually buy new, with the odd small-medium vintage speaker or two.

thought it would be universal knowledge by now that we shouldn't lift things with our back, but out of our legs
Yes and no. You need a strong back (and core) to brace your posture (neutral spine) as you use your legs to "lift". Strong legs without a correspondingly strong core/back is like having a super power subwoofer matched to a pair of discount bookshelves - as you raise the volume at some point the bookshelves will pop/distort while the subwoofer is barely stressed.

Thanks. That's useful. Is there a trick for how you use them? I am worried that I may not be able to use them on the speaker face and would and hence the speaker will fall out in that direction.

Slings on all sides. Wrap sling on speaker face with foam. Place quarter inch tabs under slings to release if necessary for testing.

no trying to be a dick, but whats the point of measure a non-production speaker?
is more useful to measure whats in the market right now
There is a lot of current floorstanding speaker that the people is thinking if buy X or Y, for these kind of stuff is nice to have measurements
For example, bw is a very commom brand, even ASR do not have any 700 series measurements

Owner benefit I suppose. It helps to know what you’ve got, if you’re considering another purchase down the line. There’s always the used / refurbished market to consider as well.

i think ASR has a fair bit of disdain for B&W with reason

also

while they are old they are still availabe

further a lot of this is in the name of science... like as the masthead of this site is about

the OP here bought the speakers with his own money and sat on them for a year and then tested them

i feel like Amir wants to know and get this out of the way

i dont think we could ask for more

to me i dont really care to see any more B&W stuff, because i know how it'll turn out... and this is from someone who likes B&W

Then why don’t you buy a pair and send them over :)
why? amir already have anothers speakers ;)
I have a couple more floorstanders to review. I have had opportunity for more but just can't handle them. This one was 65 pounds. Others are much heavier, usually clocking at 100+ pounds. Even with manufacturers offering to ship and pick up, I still have a hard time dealing with them.

What do you mean? You can order it and get it next month.
As far as i know, new yamaha products you can buy are something like this
Yamaha in my country does not have these 20 old year speaker
I wasnt talking about the jbl 590, i talked about the ns1000m
