JBL HDI-1600 Speaker Review

I had a pair of HDI 1600s here for about a month before deciding to upgrade to the HDI-3600s and a 4500 center.
I find the quality of the veneer and it's finish to be top shelf on all 5 of my examples !
I use the 1600/4500 for my LCR. Would like to get the 3600s but no walnut left and would be absolutely impossible to make work in my apartment. For the closeout price I got these at they are definitely amazing for the average persons needs
Awesome! Add a good subwoofer (I'll bet you have) and you got a great multich music system that's hard to beat at 4x the money!

Bummer, but the 1600s deliver good bass down to around 40hz as long as you don't push them too hard.
Anyway from what you say about your situation I don't think playing real loud is something you do much.
No problem, just enjoy the excellent inner detail and smooth response till your housing improves.

Yeah it’s what I like about JBL: they tend to do great at “normal” volumes

I have a pair of 3800s, the center and sub... but these bookshelves havent hit half off anywhere yet, have they?
Highly regarded speakers like the KEF LS50 get poor reviews here but JBL gets glowing recommendations. And we're supposed to think that Amir's business relationship with JBL (etc) has nothing to do with this... I am skeptical.

I appreciate Amir having access to a Klippel Near Field Scanner to measure the KEF LS50, JBL HDI-1600, and other loudspeakers.
Hi everyone, I'm about to replace my Monitor Audio Silver 100s with a pair of 1600s without having listened to them first...I'm basing my decision entirely on reviews. The reason I'm replacing the Silver 100s is that I find them a bit too fatiguing and bright. My dealer has a pair of 1600s on display, so I'd be getting those. I mainly listen to pop, rock, electronic music, and techno, often at fairly high volume. My room is about 4×4 meters, partially acoustically treated, and I also have two REL T5x subwoofers and a AUDIOPHONICS AP300-S250NCX. Do you think the 1600s would be a good fit for my setup and listening preferences?
With the addition of your subwoofers the 1600s should be all you ever need. I had a pair here for a couple months and found the tonal balance about perfect in my room. In the end I exchanged them for 3600s simply for better dynamic performance with demanding sources. I believe you'll enjoy them for decades.
Thank you Sal, this is exactly the answer I was hoping to hear. Thank you! I was torn between these and the SVS Ultra Evolution Bookshelf, which I've been eyeing for quite a while, but then this opportunity with the JBLs came up. As soon as they arrive, I'll let you all know what I think.
Yes, I think the 1600s would fix your needs well. The 1600 have a very smooth sound. It might take a bit to adjust to different in sound though. And yes, the 1600s can play loud, you just need a good enough amp due to their low sensitively. You will certainly need subs with the 1600 unless you are in a really small room. 1600 has less bass extension then the Silvers.

I’ve just bought a pair of Studio 630s and I really like them, I also have a pair of Kef R3 Metas, driven by a Denon PMA 1700ne
The JBLs don't have quite the midrange clarity of the Kefs and the bass is a tad fuller, but the treble is really smooth and detailed. I really like them and they play really well at lower volumes, which I do most of the time. They also play loud and keep their composure, not harsh or tiring. With this in mind I’m looking at the HDI 1600 version, I only paid £270 GBP for them, which in hifi terms these days is for nothing.
So yes, I would also be very interested to hear from anyone who has listened to both of these.

Know that the HDI-1600 is a much more linear speaker and will sound very differnt, in my view better, then the Studio 630 above 1000 hz. See estimated in room response comparison.
