Patricia Barber is new to me, sad to say! This album has extraordinary technical quality (studio live I guess)

Jazzmeia talking about Ella and how to scat

So she doesn't sing blue sky at all in that Youtube video, she mimes to her own recording! Not only are the acoustics of the recording and the room completely different, there's a snare drum hit near end and she keeps "singing" into her own commentary.

Here is a record that is quite a disappointment. From the liner notes:

If you notice anything different about the sound on this record it's because of a very clever man, Jonathan Horwich... a believer in not glorifying, i.e., tampering with the sound of Jazz. He was our recording engineer... the microphones...were two B&K instrument mikes set up between the two musicians. The sound was then driven by a Mark Levinson LN P-Z (sic) preamp into a specially modified Mark Levinson Studer A-80 2 track mastering machine.

Other than getting the name of the preamp wrong, what I noticed was a really bad recording. The 'mix' has Stan's saxophone overpowering Albert's piano, which sounds like it is 20 feet back. Very little acoustic reverb present, making the presentation dry and lifeless. Just goes to show that it takes more than expensive 'high end' gear to make a decent recording. PS: mine is the original LP issue--don't know if it's been released on CD, or if anyone remastered or otherwise fixed the mix.

Grover (R.I.P.) was the best! I have pretty much everything he has released. Love his early stuff in the funk/fusion era. And oh my, the musicians he played with- the absolute best in the business.

Only "touching" Jazz, the "Köln Concert" is still my favourite, from Walkman over Discman to IPhone.
The second CD I ever bought (first one was Lou Reed´s "Transformer"). It even lead me to make
a documentary about the lives of dancers from the GDR who I happened to meet while they were making a ballet (called "Keith") from the first part, a year before the wall came down... This documentary is not about the ballet per sé but the drastic changes the dancers had to face.
This would never have happened if a good friend had not advised to buy the Köln Concert back in 1984 - I bought the CD in Köln/Cologne by the way...

Very nice. I especially like his version of "Two For The Road". I also have that song on "Under The Missouri Sky", Charlie Haden & Pat Metheny(I'm a big fan of Pat Metheny).
It has the pump for sure.
