Jazz ♫ Music only | In the now, or recently, or that you love...

Algorithm (and me) suggests Ike Quebec Heavy Soul, from 1962. Allmusic: “Thick-toned tenor Ike Quebec is in excellent form… His ballad statements are quite warm, and he swings nicely on a variety of medium-tempo material. Organist Freddie Roach, bassist Milt Hinton and drummer Al Harewood are typically fine in support.” (Algorithm, in this case, knows Blue Note just re-issued this on vinyl. $29.95 for a copy noisier than any stream...)

I have four cds from this artist:

its a strange one because these date back to the 80s 90s... the artist has had a long career in pop which i find quite 'not to my taste' but her early jazz sets are amazing

i love her interpretation of the classics

Legendary drummer Louis Bellson leads a small band instead of a big band on Cool, Cool Blue, from 1994, with nice sax work. ‘My collection Monday’ (LP).

Allmusic: “He performs with pianist Frank Strazzeri and bassist George Duvivier, adds tenor Ted Nash on 4 tunes, and then also multi-saxophonist Matt Catingub on 3 numbers… All of them swing in a spirited fashion, as one would expect from a Louie Bellson date. Good modern mainstream music.”

Tuesday 25, a retrospective on albums from a quarter-century ago, 1998. Gonna complete the Grammy set.

The Grammy big band album winner was The Count Basie Orchestra’s Count Plays Duke. Allmusic: “The Basie band continues to be a lively ghost under the direction of trombonist Grover Mitchell, disciplined and crisply swinging with a solid crew of soloists.”

Previously (link to upthread). Grammy Best Album for: Instrumental, Herbie Hancock Gershwin’s World; Latin, Arturo Sandoval Hot House. And: Joanne Brackeen Pink Elephant Magic; Don Sebesky I Remember Bill; Erik Truffaz The Dawn; Phil Woods The Rev And I; Charlie Mariano An American In Italy.

Here’s an interesting release from 2022. AllAboutJazz: “The Color of Angels, an engaging album by trombonist Doug Scarborough's sextet, blends music with a jazz heart and Middle Eastern temperament…. He enlists a trio plus a violinist and a Middle Eastern drum, a darbuka… Melodically and rhythmically, Scarborough blends the seemingly adversarial forms into a bright and pleasurable listening experience.”

Doug is a professor at Whitman College, Walla Walla, Washington, USA, and this is his 3rd album. The video is a very short promo video. Please enjoy this nice fusion.

JazzWise: “Saxophonist Jacques Schwarz-Bart has impressed from his early days…as a sideman to the likes of Roy Hargrove and Danilo Pérez. The Harlem Suite is stylistically panoramic, as it celebrates the majesty of swing with a blend of appealing themes and attention-grabbing improvisation. Vocalist Stephanie McKay and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington help.” This is his ~9th release since 1999.

AllAboutJazz: “Trumpeter Linley Hamilton's Ginger’s Hollow includes drummer Adam Nussbaum, bassist Mark Egan, pianist Cian Boylan and saxophonist Derek Doc O'Connor on a spirited set of hard-bop and soul-jazz-influenced originals.

Instantly accessible yet impassioned, unabashedly straight-ahead yet finely textured, Ginger's Hollow is a notable effort from the indefatigable Hamilton, a musician who gets better with age and, over 7,000 gigs on, his remarkable work ethic.”

This is Linley’s 6th album since 2003. He is a professor at Ulster University Magee, N. Ireland. He presents Jazz World with Linley Hamilton weekly on BBC Radio Ulster. Please enjoy some nice new bop, from someone who truly lives the art -- creation, performance, education, promotion.

This 2016 album earned a Latin Grammy Best Jazz Album nomination. AllAboutJazz: “Pianist Antonio Adolfo's vibrant and compelling Tropical Infinito re-emphasizes the musical magic of a well-balanced rhythm and horn section.” Antonio leads a crew of top-notch Brazilian musicians.

Adolfo has ~5 more Latin Grammy plus ~2 more regular Grammy nominations, and has released ~35 albums since 1964. This guy’s been active since Getz/Gilberto, and he released a new album this year! His 2022 album, Octet And Originals, was recommended upthread here, with 3 nice videos.

Saxophonist Felipe Salles' latest album Home Is Here was recommended recently upthread. The YouTube link to the playlist of each song performed live in the studio, which was incomplete at the time of the recommendation, is now complete with all of the videos now finished. Here's the link: Felipe Salles Home Is Here video playlist. The album and the videos are really nice. Here's the original recommendation, and also check out Felipe's 2022 album, Tiyo's Songs Of Life, also recommended upthread.

AllAboutJazz: “....Tenor saxophonist and composer Felipe Salles… had extensive conversations with each of the guest musicians…. before composing the pieces on which each would be featured. The result is a polychromatic, adventurous album that allows Salles' multidimensionality as a composer to flourish. And with top-shelf guests such as saxophonists Melissa Aldana and Paquito D'Rivera, and trumpeter Nadje Noordhuis in the lineup, the results are as fulfilling as one would expect.”

This is Felipe’s ~10th album since 2004. His 2022 release Tiyo’s Songs Of Life, was recommended upthread here.

The entire album is performed live in the studio, YouTube video playlist, with some songs still to be added to complete the full album. Here's the tune with Paquito D'Rivera. It's a bit long, but hey, can you ever have too much Paquito? Please enjoy s'more nice, new, jazz.

Here’s another post for ‘Friday 50’, albums from 50 years ago, or 1973. Previously (link to upthread): Dave Brubeck We’re All Together Again...; Gato Barbieri Bolivia; Elvin Jones Mr. Jones; Donald Byrd Black Byrd.

Saxophonist/flutist Dave Liebman has over 250 albums in a lead role. 1973 gave us his 2nd release, First Visit, with pianist Richard Breibach, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Jack DeJohnette. Goes a bit free at times, but what Holland/DeJohnette, and, well, Liebman release doesn’t? Dave also played on Mr. Jones, above. Please enjoy a solid, early release, from a prolific jazz master.

AllAboutJazz: Duncan Eagles, the tenor saxophonist in Partikel wrote 7 originals, for Narrations, his 2nd album as leader. He is joined by fellow Partikel member Max Luthert on bass, Polish pianist Tomasz Bura, and Portuguese drummer Zoe Pascal.

Eagles plays with a full tone, dry, controlled and melodic throughout. There are strong themes in each tune and Luthert and Pascal relentlessly build an array of fresh grooves and textures to compliment each track. Narrations is an accomplished album of versatile, open and appealing contemporary jazz that is well worth hearing.”

From an album released a half-century ago, to one released 2 months ago. That's jazz.
