Jazz ♫ Music only | In the now, or recently, or that you love...

Here's a nice Latin Jazz big band album, Bobby SanabriaBig Band Urban Folktales. Grammy nominated in 2008, it was the first Latin jazz CD to chart at number one on the Jazz Weekly National Chart. Drummer/percussionist Sanabria has been active since 1983, and has released 10 albums as a leader, with 6 Grammy nominations.

The video is his Multiverse Big Band in a recent Zoom performance, after a short intro. Please enjoy a really nice Latin jazz album.

His Tito Puente concert tribute disc smokes.

The recent post upthread here, led to info that Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band are important in the history of HiRez and multichannel audio recording. Their 1st album, 2002s Swingin' For The Fences, is considered the 1st official DVD-Audio release, and earned 2 Grammy Award nominations in the process.

Their next album, XXL, released in DVD-A and hybrid SACD, earned 3 regular Grammy Award nominations. XXL also earned a “Surround Sound Award, ‘Best Made for Surround Sound Title’”, 2 years before the Grammys began an official category for HiRez and MultiChannel audio releases.

I imagine Big Band in multichannel is awesome!

Wonder which vinyl version gives the most 3 dimensional sound stage? Just kiddin’. Discogs lists no vinyl release for either album. ;)

The video is a bit fuzzy but the sound is great. Please enjoy both of these raucous albums, in compressed, lossy, old school stereo.

Nice Chick Corea, with his Origin sextet from 1999, Change. Wrote AllAboutJazz: "More than an hour of exemplary mainstream Jazz during which there is seldom a letdown. Having played together for some time now, the group sounds more self–assured and comfortable with one another, approaching at times the threshold of telepathic, which is where every purposeful Jazz combo aspires to be. As for Corea, he has pulled eleven adorable rabbits from his composer’s hat, keeping everything fresh and appealing throughout."

Nominated for a 2000 Grammy. Please enjoy an album with a relaxed mood, Chick Corea style.

From AllAboutJazz: "It is an utter joy to witness the profound evolution of a genius. With the release of Alegria, Wayne Shorter continues to widen and refine his unique musical vision—and share it with the world...In the end, Alegria is filled with music of individual presence, subtlety, sophistication, and a quiet, beautiful bravery that is quite admirable."

Backed by 2 groups: Brad Mehldau (p)/Teri Lynn Carrington (d)/Alex Acuna (perc)/brass & strings or Danilo Perez (p)/Brian Blade (d)/John Patitucci (b). :)

Someone musta liked it, as it won 2 Grammy Awards in 2004: Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Instrumental Composition, for the 1st tune 'Sacajawea.'

Please enjoy one of Wayne Shorter's 21st century classics.

From AllAboutJazz: "A dynamic approach, delivered with crisp modern panache, characterizes saxophonist, clarinetist & composer Benjamin Deschamps' Augmented Reality... Augmented Reality is for contemporary jazz lovers who will appreciate the intricate attention to detail—all those delicate cymbal riffs, the stellar bass work underneath all the melodic lines—and sense of invention in composition. It is the organic groove of the musicians that seamlessly weaves all the threads together."

Deschamps has been active in Canada since 2017, and this 2021 release is his 2nd as leader. The video is a nice performance of an aptly titled album tune. It appears Ukranian president Volodymyr Zelensky has a side-gig as a drummer. ;) Please enjoy a solid effort from a jazz newcomer.

Here's another 2021 release, a lock-down project. "The saxophonist and composer David Larsen plays 9 originals that were penned over the last 4 years, and he’s got Greg Yasinitsky (tenor, baritone saxophone) and Ken Peplowski (clarinet), as well as several others for the diverse jazz outing... Deviate From Standards is yet another top notch jazz listen in his rapidly expanding catalog" (source).

Larsen is an educator at Spokane College, and this is his ~5th release as leader since 2015. The video is a nice sextet from a previous EP. Please enjoy some solid jazz tunes.
