From Spotify: "Pianist Antonio Adolfo grew up in a musical family in Rio de Janeiro, ... and at seventeen he was already a professional musician. His teachers include Eumir Deodato and the great Nadia Boulanger. During the 60's he led his own trio and toured in Brazil and abroad.... His compositions, have been recorded by such artists as Sérgio Mendes, Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert and Earl Klugh....Six recent CD releases have been nominated for a Latin Grammy."

His 2022 album is Octet and Originals. From AllAboutJazz.com: "While Adolfo is more than adequate as a pianist, the entire vibe of the recording is just relaxed and musical....Everyone is outstanding. The rhythm section simply seems to float on top of the time....Even for those not inclined to dig Brazilian fare, this is a recording that will wear very, very well. It is an outstanding example of its genre, and of Antonio Adolfo's work in particular. He has been in the midst of it all since the late '60s. With any luck, he has a long way to go and much more to offer."

3 live videos follow, the first is a song from the album, but with added vocals, then an Antonio composition not on the album, and then he does Coltrane, because, why not? YouTube and Spotify links for the new album are at the end. Please enjoy some nice Brazilian jazz.

From Brazilian jazz, to Latvian jazz? From their website: "The Latvian Radio Big Band has played a significant role in the history of jazz in Latvia. The big band’s legacy to Latvian culture is priceless – currently, the sound library of 'Latvian Radio' holds over 9,000 recordings featuring the band. Since 2012, the big band has performed with such musical stars as James Morrison, Seamus Blake, Randy Brecker, Diane Schuur, and many others. Each of the Latvian Radio Big Band performances is like an energy exchange between the musicians and the audience. Today the collective is an integral part of the Latvian culture scene and they are preparing new and interesting projects under the leadership of artistic director Kārlis Vanags."

For an interesting project, "Pierre Bertrand (French saxophonist and big band arranger) has created a program of his original music exclusively for the Latvian Radio Big Band: a selection with an atmosphere that will transport the audience to the narrow streets of Montmartre and offer a taste of Bohemia." This is a video of the entire live performance, with wonderfully recorded sound (but wholly inadequate camera-work, ces la vie). The tunes with singer Paloma Pradal are especially captivating. Go to YouTube if you want to see the tunes time-indexed with featured performers. Just to remind us these are Latvians, playing French jazz, an accordion virtuoso features prominently, of course. An album of this was released in 2022, with a song featuring Ms. Pradal listed. YouTube and Spotify album links follow. Please enjoy some French, Latvian, Bohemian, big band jazz. ;)

From Spotify: "After 10 albums as a leader, multi-instrumentalist and composer Dr. Brian Landrus has become one of the most in demand low woodwind musicians on the planet. Landrus consistently places in the top five baritone saxophonists in the world though Downbeat and JazzTimes Critics polls in the last few years."

Landrus released his album Red List in 2022. From AllAboutJazz.com: "Saxophonist Brian Landrus created this project with a purpose summed up in its subtitle, Music Dedicated to the Preservation of our Endangered Species. ... Musical works that deal with environmental danger and the threat of extinction are often somber and heavy, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. Landrus' music takes a much different approach. The entire album celebrates these vanishing animals with music full of life and grandeur. It encompasses flowing, jazz-rock grooves, simmering funk, big band shouts and African and Jamaican rhythms and conveys a sense of the beauty and wonder these animals bring into the world and what would be lost if they disappear."

Two studio performances from the album are below, and YouTube and Spotify links to the full album follow. Please enjoy some sax jazz that goes low, low, low.

French saxophonist and flutist Pierre Bertrand is a graduate of the CNR of Nice and the CNSM of Paris, founded the Paris Jazz Big Band in 1998, currently directs the Nice Jazz Orchestra, is a jazz educator, and has been a guest conductor throughout the world. He is a sought-after big band composer and arranger, with several film and TV scores to his credit as well. He has released 3 jazz combo and 2 big band albums since 2010, one I posted about here. Below are 2 official videos from his 2021 album Colors. The 3rd vid is the Nice Jazz Orchestra, vocalist Paloma Pradal, a chorus of children, and is just fun. YouTube and Spotify links to his album Colors, his 2016 albums Joy and cover of Duke Ellington's Far East Suite, which is very nice, wrap up the post. He has a large selection of nicely recorded performances at his YouTube channel. Please enjoy some nice saxophone jazz, with a French flair.

From Spotify: "The epitome of class and elegance without the stuffiness, Ron Carter is a world-class bassist and jazz icon. Famously, he was a member of Miles Davis' second great quintet of the '60s, but is also among the greatest accompanists of all time, and has made many albums exhibiting his prodigious technique. A brilliant rhythmic and melodic player, Carter uses everything in his bass and cello arsenal, including walking lines, thick, full tones, drones, and strumming effects. Almost exclusively an acoustic player, he is nearly as accomplished in classical music as jazz."

He is, simply, the most recorded bassist in jazz history. He is the winner of three Grammy Awards, and, active well into his eighties, is the subject of a recent documentary, with now a 2022 soundtrack, Finding the Right Notes, available. The album features 3 tunes with the WDR big band, as does the first video below. The next vid is a Tiny Desk Concert trio from May 2022. YouTube and Spotify links to the new album follow, as well as a link to his 2016 album with the WDR Big Band, My Personal Songbook, just because I liked it. Please enjoy some new music from Ron Carter.
