Just discovered, already a favourite of mine:

Louis Armstrong & His All Stars concert on 22 March 1965 at the Friedrichstadtpalast in Berlin, recorded by East German television. That's behind the Iron Curtain (view from the west), less than 4 years after the Berlin Wall was erected.

Well worth watching and listening to, and a genuine historical document!

Yes. We used to send jazz musicians, including Satch and Brubeck, around the world as "ambassadors". And Willis Conover was the voice of jazz to the world on VOA.

Gleason did next to nothing on “his” jazz albums, they sold a bit in the day but come off pretty flat today. He was basically just “cashing in”.

Regardless, it is categorized as JAZZ (sometimes Easy Listening/Jazz) music, and we listen to it as such. Enjoy it very much.

Funny...everyone else that I've shared this post with on other forums has had very positive feedback on the album after listening to it via Spotify, etc. I've even turned these people into fans, according to what they've told me.

I am even going to order Christmas albums of his on vinyl because we enjoy his music so much.

I have pretty wide ranging jazz tastes, but Gleason does leave me pretty flat. But that's what makes music great - we all like different things!

The "Champagne" album seems better than much of it - I did give it a listen.
