i have been thinking of buying HD600 for a long time but never did. then a lot of things changed like 650, ndh 20's, dt 1990's, 660s and now there is ndh 30's. seen a lot of reviews back and forth on each one of them and there is something about 600 family.
never heard 600 or 650 but i want to buy them now. so the q is there anyone who owns 600, 650, 660s the whole family and what are there experience?

Make your life easy- find a shop that sells at least 2 of the headphones you are interested in and go listen. Then buy your favourite from Amazon or a retailer that has a good returns policy and listen more and explore the EQ possibilities.

Failing that, buy the HD 6XX from Drop.com (Its the 650 in different clothes) for $220 currently and be happy.

From the HD6 range the 600 and 650 seem to fare better than the 660 in public opinion.

Was about to make the exact same suggestion as @Jimbob54 without even reading the thread. Even if you did find the 600 marginally better than other 600-series, price of the 6XX makes the answer obvious. If you are planning on spending more than $220 and didn't want a closed headphone, next best options are buying a DCA+Drop Aeon Open and EQing, probably, unless you want to shell out for an Expanse or Stealth.

They're fairly similar. I would also add the HD58X to your consideration. I have not personally heard it but it's quite affordable and apparently has marginally better bass extension (probably the main shortcoming of the HD600/650) and a somewhat warmer tuning but is otherwise similar.

To me each headphone is just a bit better in certain aspects than the other ones.
Below these 4 headphones are rated in order of best performing in each aspect in a subjective sense, to me personally.
Your preference may be different.
Best on the left, the lesser ones towards the right.
  • Bass extension: HD58X > HD660S > HD650 > HD600 (with perfect seal of course)
  • Bass quality: HD660S > HD58X > HD600 > HD650
  • Mids quality: HD660S > HD58X > HD600 > HD650
  • Warmth: HD650 > HD58X > HD660S > HD600
  • Clarity: HD600 > HD660S > HD58X > HD650
  • Treble quality: HD650 > HD600 > HD660S > HD58X
  • Treble level: HD600 > HD660S > HD58X > HD650
  • Smoothness: HD650 > HD600 > HD660S > HD58X
  • Liveliness: HD660S > HD58X > HD650 > HD600
  • Neutral sound: HD600 > HD660S > HD58X > HD650
  • imaging: HD600 = HD650 = HD58X = HD660S (all very similar)
  • price: HD58X >HD600 > HD650 > HD660S

I don't know if it is just me and a youth spent in retail, but this kind of activity annoys the biscuits out of me. I just feel it is so unfair to the 'bricks and mortar' stores. That and who is taking the hit on all the returns? </old man rant>

Its not ideal, and if the store is reasonably competitive on price I would buy from them- certainly compared to importing from say Ali-express where warranty can be an issue.

But if Amazon sell something 20-30 % cheaper on a £400 item then there is only one way consumers will behave. My bigger issue is finding a store that has at least a decent number of items to try from my shortlist. A quick look now suggests finding anyone near here with any 600/650 to try isnt throwing out much.

Agree 100%. I bought HD600s in 2006, changed the pads on them a couple of times, sold them on HeadFi, then bought lightly used HD6XX and am quite happy. Better bass extension and clarity, IMO, but not as warm as all the HD650s I auditioned from 2006-2009 that I found to be overly warm vs. the HD600.
