I assume there is one for vinyl somewhere where you can dial-in different cartridges, tracking parameters and add noisy distractions to your digital music!

Tape simulators is it's own category of software plug-ins. And yes, vinyl has also been simulated. I remember a plug-in from the late 90ies which, among other parameters, allowed you to adjust how worn out the record was.

You should go and browse through gearspace (when it is back up) some parts of it are obsessed with physical tape and tape simulators for example here is another one that people actually pay money for

Those of us who remember wow, flutter, head cleaning, bias adjustments, degaussing, print through etc etc were glad to see the back of tape and do not wish to go back…

I'm waiting for 8 track, though I expect that level of distortion, wow/flutter/ track changing, and heat damage drama will require much more powerful processing

I do love the needle drop knob that goes from "normal" to freaky". The "cat hair/pollen" toggle is good too.

It all depends on how and why such tools get used. There can be perfectly valid artistic reasons to use such 'fake' tools to evoke a mood or feeling, just as there are for 'fake' reverb, 'fake' tube distortion, 'fake' stereo or 'fake' synthesised instruments. Modern studio production is all about creating an illusion and would be pretty boring if such sound manipulation tools were unavailable. They are just another colour in the palette.

I still have two Kenwood double tape decks with all the latest cassette gimmicks from the early 90s.

Previous sales of tapedecks were good, but I don't want to be in a position where I have to fallback to software for this experience.

Most tape simulators are really about simulating 1/4” open reel at 15ips which was basic format for recording rather than compact cassettes it’s still profoundly weird though.

There is something about a cassette deck that looks like this one that warms my heart, even though tapes themselves were often a pain in the arse! I think it's the slick, understated product design and all those lovely, glowing indicators, they take me back to my early days of loving hi-fi gear. Nice!

Yes I don't miss the format but I do miss the decks. By the time I could afford a really good one the format was dead.
