IsoAcoustics Isolation Feet - Does it really make positive effect or fancy accessories

The first question I asked was have you tried the Isoacoustic product?

No. I haven't tried copper bands to cure arthritis either,but I'm pretty sure they don't work

Are you trying to suggest that it's absolutely impossible that they are beneficial in some circumstances?

Reality is actually a manifestation of probabilities. In this world, it's enough for something to be very low probability, for it to approach 'impossible'

Do you think persons here posting charts and graphs that supposedly lend credibility to their opinions are more knowledgeable regarding speaker design that Paul Barton at PSB or Magico's designers? That's laughable.

Do you think it's impossible?

Do you think it's possible that some important things related to audio reproduction are not measurable by modern testing methods?

Do you think it's probable?


Has that thought ever crossed your mind? Why don't you knock off the condescending pedantic attitude and actually try the product risk free and tell us what you think? Or you could just sit there pointing at charts and graphs supporting your opinion produced by supposed experts and insisting it's just impossible.

The usual reply from believers....if that is the case, then a simple blind test will prove that the changes are real and that measurements failed to detect it...yet all the believers fail miserably under blind tests, followed by sad excuses...that is IF they even dare to test.
So on one hand you have FACTS and on the other anecdotes lol

Many issues come down to a lack of understanding of statistical significance and an insufficient number of trials.

Not really. Believers is clearly referring to things that have never been proven to do anything like exoteric power cords, etc.
Believing something where there is zero proof be it scientific or blind tests...that makes you a believer.
That is what we are talking about.
All those Snakeoil companies if they had even one hint of actual evidence it would be posted on the first page of their websites for all to see lol
Finding "proof" using a post at Audiogon of all places...that’s like citing a Yelp review from a flat-earth convention as proof the Earth is flat.

Not enough information is given about the test to be sure proper controls were in place. Even then, 61% getting it "right" among 39 participants could easily result from blind guessing, as in you might see a similar result if you were faking the switching and the participants were actually listening to the same thing the whole time. So yeah, "all believers fail miserably under blind tests" is still true.

Yeah, not really.
Like when someone sends me supposedly incontrovertible proof of a scientific discovery uniquely found in The National Enquirer.
You should raise your bar a bit, likely more than 5%.
 
since I haven’t seen anyone share, 24 participants guessing correctly of 39 is (using a binomial test) only a p-value ~0.20, when 0.05 or 0.01 are common thresholds of statistical significance. 61% is too close to random chance on so few participants.

Per the description in the link, the test involved two identical pairs of speakers, one pair wired with one type of cable and the other pair wired with the other type of cable, both pairs in the same room at the same time. So the pairs of speakers being compared were in different locations in the room. That alone is going to create audible differences.
 
I think (but I'm not sure) for isolation feet to have any legitimate audible effect, two things need to go wrong:

-Your speaker cabinet needs to be vibrating a significant amount, which it can, but shouldn't be
-Your floor needs to be resonating due to the speaker cabinet's vibrations and re-radiating that audibly into the room

I think this CAN happen but usually doesn't. Thoughts?

ive not used the isoacoustics feet but i have used the svs sub feet to great effect. really helped reduce room resonance through the floor and walls.

Mr. Gomes admits that his “test” lacked adequate sample size. And it is easy to latch onto that as it provides a reassuring pathway to fail to reject the null hypothesis.

But Mr. Gomes also notes that two reviewers for Stereophile magazine had no difficulty identifying which set up had the higher priced cables. So maybe some people hear things the rest of us don’t, and maybe some people hear differences reliably that our measurements can’t detect.

When we throw around terms like “all” in the face of even limited evidence to the contrary, we close the door on exploring possible improvements to things we care about that might actually matter. None of us should be so certain “all” the time.

Yeah, but not really at all.

Fremer is too smart to be tricked into taking a controlled test that he couldn't game, cheat, or fake a positive result. That alone disqualifies the test results.
Speaker cables. Really. Your personal bar for evidence is way too low.

Perhaps. But I do, and with human subjects it is very difficult to get the combination of controls and sample size needed to run an ABX test of subjective preference or demonstrate with any statistical power that a difference was detected. This is why they are not routinely done. One human with a machine can analyze multiple devices in less time and expense than is required to run one effective comparison of two different items with subjects.

But there is a different kind of informal replication that goes on with audio enthusiasts in their own listening rooms all over the world, and their buying and replacement behavior is based on a combination of personal experience, collective knowledge, now both significantly expanded and corrupted by the Internet, and market hype. The key is to sort through it all to arrive at something that you enjoy within your budget. Measurements make a good place to start a hifi journey, but due to the significant uncertainties in equipment and room matching, individual taste and a few other intangibles, it is rarely the best place to end it.

I have not met John Atkinson, but I have met Michael Fremer. Based on my limited experience, he knows his way around high end hifi gear and can tune systems that sound really very good. Maybe he is dishonest about his auditory acuity or just lucky, but I am fairly certain he has above average listening skills.

Did you actually read the Wall Street Journal article? What axe does that writer have to grind? Did you watch the video on Steve Guttenbergs YouTube channel that was posted in this thread by @MattHooper in June? Can you explain the methodology for an ABX subject test that you would accept the results from? Do you even have the expertise to know what that would look like? Do you believe engineers and designers tune their audio creations by ear or do you believe they look at a graph and say “bang, it’s good, design the packaging and price out the manufacturing”?

Enjoyment of music and the hobby of hifi are subjective by their very nature. If someone can reproducibly hear a difference that you can’t measure, instead of saying their mind or their hearing is broken, maybe it’s your measurement device that needs be improved.

I am fairly certain he has above average listening skills.
How would he acquire these skills? Just from listening to a lot of music? You can't acquire skills from a totally passive process. I doubt he's done any formal listening training so he's actually no better or worse at perceiving differences than the rest of us.

Fremer critically listens to music and music reproduction systems taking notes about what he hears and then writes articles about it as his job. That strikes me as a fairly “active” process.

Well, apparently Fremer was better than 39% of the people who took the test described in the WSJ article who were unable to distinguish between the sound of one cable set up or the other. If he has been doing that as his job for decades, and there was in fact a difference, whether it was due to speaker position, air currents from the HVAC system in the room, or detectable sonic differences between cables, I would hope that a professional reviewer would be better at perceiving those differences than the average hifi show attendees.
