Is to worth spending the extra money on a larger woofer (6.5 to 8 inch) or getting a sub?

From Floyd's (and others) research, lower frequency driver placement in rooms is important, this also doesn't seem to generally be the same spot that you want to put your Left and Right speakers.

Also, bigger drivers designed for the lower frequencies usually do so with less distortion (If we can hear it or not is a whole other topic and thread on here).

Downsides are integration, more locations for speakers means different phase relationships between them, and it takes a lot to get them right, but when you do everything blends together to where you can't even tell there is a subwoofer.

I am a fan of using separate subwoofers and DSP to get them aligned properly.

Yes it is worth getting bigger drivers and getting a sub.

You usually have a little 2 way with a 5 inch woofer on a stand. Might as well get a floorstander with an 8 inch or pair of 6.5 inch woofers. You can get a slim one that doesn't try to go below 45-50 hz. Then you add a sub. That relieves the floorstander which can have effortless low distortion across the range in use (down to 80 or 100 hz). And then a sub is place in what might be a better room position and can separately handle the really low frequencies. Plus the extra bandwidth of the main speaker makes the crossover between them work very well.

I'm starting to think we need a separate forum to wall off "purchase advice" posts, they're getting a bit out of control IMO.

I agree. With such a vague initial post with no specifics whatsoever, it just a waste of time to even reply.

Particularly as the OP just poses a dumb-ass question and doesn't even bother to participate in the thread. See below.
