Is There or Will There Ever Be Another Singer Like Ann Wilson (Heart)?

Ahem.

Negative, Houston.
No joke.

Ok.

Again, no accounting for taste. I like Joanna Newsom, who some people find to be the vocal equivalent of anchovies.

But in terms of singing greatness, I certainly don’t recognize in that performer anything like the type of vocal control and power exhibited by Anne Wilson. She seems to be somewhat struggling against a lack of natural singing talent to my ears.

Kate Bush was another who raised more than men’s eyebrows when she sang. Hard to compare her to Anne Wilson though who had such a big rocker voice. There aren’t a ton of female singers that worked in that hard rock genre. I heard someone say Chrissie Hynde. I love her but she is more punk pop to me. It’s not her range, but her unique sound that set her apart. In today’s music… it’s tough cause it’s so poppy. Pink has a pretty big voice and can rock when she wants to. Someone like Brandi Carlisle has a huge voice, but never heard her sing anything close to a rocker.

Control isn't something I'd associate with Ann (no e) Wilson.
She's a belter who gets screechy when she belts. Not my cuppa chai.
Joanna Newsom is interesting -- and I mean that in a good way.

Certainly fair enough if she’s not your cup of tea. But your description sounds like maybe you’re not familiar with Heart’s catalogue.
Anne was hardly screeching all the time.
Listen to dreamboat Annie, dog and butterfly, dream of the archer, cry to me - as only several examples. And I wouldn’t understand how you could listen to those and say you don’t hear beautiful vocal control and phrasing.

Certainly have some new ones I am checking out. So thanks for those sharing. And yet I stand by my statement.

I have gone the gamut. From Miley to Mariah even to Courtney Barnett (who I actually find interestingly original). I love some Sheryl Crow, Pat B, Blondie, and I even think Rachel Zegler has a sneaky potential to be up there with capability just not sure of the path she is on with her selections though. I even find some folk singers to be in their zone like this band called the Local Honey's that had a couple grippers.

Ann is iconic. I am hopeful yet doubtful there is or will be one who is in their element with the same skills. But keep them coming as there are more than sand on the beach to check out.

Miley is an interesting artist to me. She spent a great deal of time with Flaming Lips who are a weird kind of awesome the last 20+ years. She has that rock gravel in her voice. But keeps going back to being a pop star hottie. I guess I can say tens of millions of dollars is nice. But maybe she will do something artistically when money and fame don’t matter. I think we all see artists that do the most brilliant work after the fame. Graceland by Paul, Diva by Annie, Moments by Plant, or even Pros and Cons by Waters just to name a few.

Did I say that?
I am very familiar with their catalog.

Well, you reference that she gets screechy when she belts music to suggest she doesn’t have vocal control. Yet plenty in their catalogue to show she has a beautiful vocal control - both when she’s singing very softly and also louder. So I suspect that what you see a screechy and a lack of vocal control is, at least at those moments, a character she’s going for. Because she clearly generally has excellent vocal control.

In my critique it's not about being able to belt or scream a high note. There is something in her ability to drive timed emotion that invokes the feelings of the lyrics with tonal control and layers over the song. It's really quite amazing.

Ann has a great voice, even now. What I find interesting is how as female vocalists seem to be able to maintain their range and power in later years to much more extent than their male counterparts. Here in the UK we have a live music program -Later with Jools Holland, he regularly has soul artistes from 60s on, and most of the women still manage to have maintained their ranges.

This is such a young very talented female singer, Awa Fall, half Senegalese, halve Italian. She sings mainly but not only reggae. Here it's only with a guitar as backing for The Women's Committee of FAO & Africa Day in 2021
