Is The Revel Ultima Salon2 STILL the State Of The Art?

Do Salon 2 go as loud as JBL M2? Was there such a comparison in the famous shootout?

Harry @Audiofirstdesigns_Harry made a compact model of the Type 1425 (not commercialized); perhaps he will make similar full-size 2way one someday. Say with 2*12" or 2*10 midbass drivers. Basless (I am a proponent of designing a subwoofer system for a specific room). This should be loud\clean\uncompressed enough for most home stereo enthusiasts.

If I have seen right the thread is going to be discussion about reference speaker in general.
One of my personal reference and for sure not known on asr is the Skyline S1 and F1 from the german based company FM-Audio.
I haven't seen any comparable loudspeaker concept so far.
The beamwidth is exceptional wide and even in both horizontal and vertical axis, high SPL capability, great resolution etc.

Came across the Perlisten S7t’s measurements on Steeophile. https://www.stereophile.com/content/perlisten-s7t-loudspeaker-measurements

Vs. Salon2

I would say the Magico S5 is better than the Perlisten, which has a peak at 10 khz.

I would expect the Magico S5 to be the best among the 3.

Oh wait, I was gonna get the Lexus GX550 overtrail+ after the demand died down a bit but why not buy a pair of speakers instead:). $75k+ for a pair of speakers is outrageous.

Who here in this thread own speakers that cost $75k+?

Maybe I don’t know my fellow forum members. $75k is more than my entire system’s value at MSRP.

My DIY speakers have drivers worth almost $3,000. If these were store-bought speakers, they might cost $20,000 or $40,000 or even $60,000. But not $75,000!

That’s hilarious

I am sure your system sounds awesome! However, most people prefer that low frequency bump in room. See this post: https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...he-harman-loudspeaker-preference-curve.50602/

Of course personal preferences can vary substantially and it seems like you've expertly adjusted your system to get what you want.
I experimented with low-frequency bump for years, but I found that reducing it significantly improves the resolution of bass textures.

A flatter in-room response allows me to clearly identify individual bass lines, harmonic content, and rhythmic detail, even in dense arrangements. The bass becomes far more articulate, transparent, and musically informative than with a mid-bass boost.

Well, i will be another one who is not fixated on cardioid bass. In the sense that you can get near perfect bass with other strategies like multiple subs and dsp etc. The game changer for bass perfection is Dirac ART. Look at all the measuremsnts the average user is posting with Dirac ART - often from our compromised multi-use living/home spaces. Even cardioid would not achieve those results.

Having said that , the Ascilabs future cardioid speakers are intriguing!
So Dirac for more linear bass ? :)
would be good to see proof of that!!!

It is one of the options ive been looking into, and cardioid.
its one or the other.
Hi

For better Bass, cardioid bass could be a solution. It may not fully addresses the issues in a room: The peaks and valleys that characterizes the room bass response, may be less prominent or their levels and Q, at some of the room modes less extreme. It remains that for smooth and linear bass, DSP is required in most rooms.

That doesn't really say anything. Many do like these speakers, but SOTA?
When John Atkinson was asked about the best speaker he had ever heard a few years ago, after testing 750, this is what he had to say:

This was posted to Youtube 13 years ago...
You have testimonial like that for any other speaker since then? And what else would you look for beyond the adjectives he used?

I am surprised the results of the blind listening test attached to post #172 in this thread have not received more attention: In that test, the Salon 2 is preferred over a Revel Performa 228 BE (with statistically significant results). The spinorama of the 228 BE is quite a bit smoother than that of the Salon 2, more like the examples posted in this thread (AsciLab, Genelec etc) - most of which have too narrow directivity compared to the Salon 2 in my opinion, and it might well be that the slightly wider directivity of the Salon 2 (providing spaciousness and envelopment) would be preferred over any of these more modern, "technically perfect" examples.

No, and I'm not even disagreeing--I have no idea!
But I expect evidence for a SOTA claim in 2025 to be more recent than two popes ago :)
