If the seller can't hear a tear in the driver - and he's being 100% honest - then what does that tell you about the quality of speaker you're getting?Seller says he doesn't hear any issues.

bad is bad regardless of the listening distanceI have a later model (which broke down) and I was very happy with it so i looked for something similar. They are bad by normal standards, but they are excellent as desktop speakers and have them only half a meter away from my ear. I'm not sure if multi driver ones will sound ok from such a short distance.
It has all already been covered but that cone is dead meat. Water damage/stains and a huge hole. It will meaure poorly and surely sound like crap.Seller says he doesn't hear any issues. Even if there are, can it be repaired or is it not worth the risk?

Any other coaxial recommendations for $500 at most with no subwoofer, besides KEF?You might be interested in coaxials in general as @thewas stated and the new Kali has a similar aesthetic to this speaker.
Can't say I have any, no. The Kali IN-5 with the ceiling bracket is on sale for some reason but that'd still be $600 for the pair.Any other coaxial recommendations for $500 at most with no subwoofer, besides KEF?
AmenWhy buy what's clearly broken? Always so many other choices out there.

Who would even try to sell you that?
I have a set of speakers here with a small dent in the cone. Fairly small (about 1/3" on a 6" driver)but it obviously affected the driver cone integrity as it measures very high levels of Harmonic Distortion and actually makes a 'whistling' sound when playing a sweep at a decent SPL. It sound audibly different from the good driver on every 'lab' type of test.
Would it blend in better with music, yes ----> but then you have all that distortion down in the background. So, definetly not what one pays for with Hi-Fi.
WIsh I had a photo handy so you could see how little visual damage it is and yet how much it affects the output.
With a beefy cone sub bass driver, repairs are easier or in a low fidelity application. In a high fidelity application I would say, never buy a speaker with any damages to to any drivers unless you can replace that drive in cost advantageous manner.
