Is buying speakers with a small hole in the driver a bad idea?

I have a later model (which broke down) and I was very happy with it so i looked for something similar. They are bad by normal standards, but they are excellent as desktop speakers and have them only half a meter away from my ear. I'm not sure if multi driver ones will sound ok from such a short distance.
bad is bad regardless of the listening distance

Seller says he doesn't hear any issues. Even if there are, can it be repaired or is it not worth the risk?

It has all already been covered but that cone is dead meat. Water damage/stains and a huge hole. It will meaure poorly and surely sound like crap.
Who would even try to sell you that?

I have a set of speakers here with a small dent in the cone. Fairly small (about 1/3" on a 6" driver)but it obviously affected the driver cone integrity as it measures very high levels of Harmonic Distortion and actually makes a 'whistling' sound when playing a sweep at a decent SPL. It sound audibly different from the good driver on every 'lab' type of test.
Would it blend in better with music, yes ----> but then you have all that distortion down in the background. So, definetly not what one pays for with Hi-Fi.

WIsh I had a photo handy so you could see how little visual damage it is and yet how much it affects the output.

With a beefy cone sub bass driver, repairs are easier or in a low fidelity application. In a high fidelity application I would say, never buy a speaker with any damages to to any drivers unless you can replace that drive in cost advantageous manner.

You might be interested in coaxials in general as @thewas stated and the new Kali has a similar aesthetic to this speaker.

Any other coaxial recommendations for $500 at most with no subwoofer, besides KEF?

Y'all remember the famous/infamous "Insignia" coaxes that were all the rage for a few months -- shortly before Andrew Jones' Pioneer SP-BS22-LR displaced 'em? :)

Insignia NS-B2111 according to a quick googlin'.
Their 15 minutes of fame was in the summer of 2006.

Of course, in the traditional stone soup (or nail broth) fashion, folks bought 'em oh-so-cheap -- and then modified the snot out of them...

EDIT: Of course -- Of course, GR Research had an upgrade for 'em. :)
We have to go to the Wayback Machine -- but it's there to be found.

$600, if you can stretch.
Kali IN-5-c's are on sale $300ea

These are sonically identical to the regular IN-5's
You should also be able to find a set of used Kali's for $500 or less.
Being powered you save your amp $$.
You might find IN-8's V2, used for $500 or so as well. (The larger model)

Are you in the USA?
If so also the ELAC UB51 passives for $299 a pair or less(Amazon has had them for less than $250 on sale recently, might drop again but $299 is pretty decent)
