Not the best title... I have an SMSL, Marantz SR5014 and 40 year old NAD receiver, the NAD smokes everything else I have for a headphone amplifier. Question, if using an iPad or iPhone as the input source should I just max the volume on the iPad/iPhone for input gain and keep the receiver volume lower or lower input gain and higher receiver volume?

iPad to receiver input vs volume

I have no empirical evidence to support my method, but it sounds a little better to me to put the iPad volume at about ¾ of the way up and use the receiver to adjust the volume.
