Hey ASR!

Just wanted to give an introduction. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and decided to join your ranks :)

My name is Keenan, I'm a critical care RN at a Midwestern metropolitan hospital and (budget) audiophilia is my hobby. Currently a graduate student for my Acute Care Nurse Practitioner degree as well. Given that my undergraduate studies were in the physical sciences (B.S. chemistry) and I work in an industry that is highly evidence-based, I appreciate the technical and objective nature of the data/information/discussions on the forum. I do a majority of my listening on headphones, but also have a modest two-channel setup and vinyl collection. While I'm afraid I don't have any EE credentials and will have little to offer in terms of technical expertise, I'm excited to read, learn, and educate myself (time permitting -_-). Clearly many bright and experienced folks on ASR with impressive engineering backgrounds! I'll chime in when appropriate and listen when I'm in over my head :)

Cheers!

Thanks for the intro and welcome to the gang! :)

That is a good intro. I have one regret though: that you don't live near me. I know one of these days I will be subject to bodily harm because of my reviews and could use your services!!! :D

Another introduction.
I’m a historian who worked as an accountant in some unusual places (former Soviet Union, Africa), dragging my Naim based system around and rebuilding the bloody SBL speakers I don’t know how many times before eventually offloading them.
Since that I’ve pretty much ditched all the rest of my Naim kit, not least because, after numerous amp/ power supply upgrades I came to the conclusion that I could barely hear any difference from my original 102/180 pre/power combo.
Virtually all my kit was bought second hand, with pride of place being my Vivid B1 speakers, and three 1980s direct drive turntables. Two of which actually work.
I have sod all scientific, let alone engineering, knowledge. But I’m painfully rational, so as much as I think taste and subjective views are inevitable and essential in audio, I’d rather there be some underlying reasoning behind the products we use to listen to music.
I listen to a lot of vinyl, with a variety of turntables. But nearly half my music is on digital, and have just recently started streaming. Radio 3 is another great source, especially the concert broadcasts.
Living in London there’s a lot of live music available too, and I try to get to a classical concert every couple of weeks or so. I go to a pop/rock festival in Latvia every year, normally, but apart from that it’s mostly classical concerts for me. And the occasional techno club.

Hi Everyone,

Just a brief introduction of myself. I should probably write something since I've been posting for a few weeks. To start off I am primarily a headphone enthusiast and have been in the hobby for quite some time. My introduction into headphones was on a forum called Headwize, which is the predecessor to head-fi. Over the years, I have seen the headphone segment change and grow significantly. I'm a huge geek and like learning very technical subjects like circuit designs, measurements, etc. I also enjoy building diy headphone amplifiers when time permits. Unfortunately I have not built anything in years due to all my time commitments.

Now for the boring stuff. By trade, I am a professional accountant (CPA). I have worked in and out of various industries also been an entrepreneur. I currently work in the software industry specializing in corporate/enterprise management software. Outside of work, most of my spare time is dedicated to serving as a board director for several non-profit organizations. Not much time left for the headphone hobby. lol!

Hi there, I'm known on Emotiva forums where I hang out. I thought I'd join since I've been reading some of your measurement articles. I am very subjective in my assessment of audio gear. I can't think of much else to say other than hi! I have reasonably low technical expertise and am not an engineer. But I am very interested in audio. I hope you post the Yggy measurements soon!

Hi ASR!

Saw this website while researching the topping D30 dac and am so happy this site exists! This is the forum I've been looking for as most of the others are just about a complete waste of time. Hopefully a little bit of this knowledge here stays with me!

Little about myself: Poor college kid, have been looking into audio stuff for about 2 years now. Started off only having cheap ear buds and sony on ear headphones. Then moved on to better ear buds up to $100. Then got into over hear headphones a year ago which were amazing. Just got some speakers a month ago and barely use headphones anymore now lol. The last field to wander in would be tubes, which I plan to start at the end of this year. In general I will love to learn more about design, diy, and basics of audio / electronics from this site, and of course the amazing reviews of equipment!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the introduction. Reminds of me of my poor college days. :)

We have a strong emphasis on value engineering, reviewing and discussing low cost products. So you are in good company.

I have a tube product to review so we are finally getting into that here too.

That could work out well as judging by some of the reviews and posts it is pretty clear that drugs are involved...

As an aside, I received BSEE and BSCoE (computer engineering) degrees but also completed all the coursework to apply to medical school. Was planning to go into neuroradiology or some such but got sidetracked by all the fun in engineering so went that way instead.

Funny aside: My last semester, after having completed some 160+ semester hours as an undergrad (and working my way through the whole time), I was finally ready to get my degrees and get out. The Dean of the College of Engineering (not Dean of EE, a guy I knew pretty well, but the head of everything, someone I had pretty much only read about) called me into his office. A friend of mine had the same thing happen the semester before and turned out he had not taken one of the required humanities class so couldn't graduate. I had shifted direction a few times so was nervous. The Dean Most High looked at me when I sat down and said "So, Don, you are planning to graduate this semester?" I of course said "Yes, sir, is something wrong?" He replied "Don't you think you should declare a major?" :) Somehow in all the years I had never actual declared a major! Pre-med is not a major... He waived the one-year requirement for advance notice and told me to get out of there. Turns out he was a nice guy who knew my Grandfather who was in on the joke. But I was pretty scared for a bit...

I had the opposite happen. Was two semester away from graduated and a friend asked if I had taken 3 PE (sport) classes for graduation. In panic I said no! They said I better or could not get my engineering degree. I immediately sign up for three: basketball, volleyball and judo at night. In a mixed grade class in Judo I got paired with a brown belt who throw me over his shoulder and I smacked down on my back from 6-7 feet above his head. Did some serious damage to my ribs and I could not breath freely for a few weeks. I then meet with the Dean and he laughed when I said I was taking those three PE classes. He said none of them was required!!!

Ouch! Literally... I taught Karate (Shotokan) in college and would never have allowed a noob to be treated like that. And a ranking student who did that would have been kicked out of class.

After lurking some time in the shadows and reading a lot (also some "not so easy tolerable nonscientific stuff) I thought I should "put a toe into the pool".
:D
To do it properly, I will devote my first post on this forum to an introduction of myself!
Hi, pleased to meet you all (virtually), my name is Ingo. I'm living right now in Cologne, Germany and I'm a chemist by training. So, a lot of the fundamental principles of how science works is familiar to me. Especially my second degree in technology and innovation management taught me a lot about statistics and so forth.
With this background, it should not surprise you that I count myself more to the "objectivist camp".
I got into "High-Fi" after the friend of my mom showed me his Mission rig in the early 90s. I got some quite affordable Mission stuff and used it until I moved to Cologne. I more or less lost sight of my love to music with working at my first appointment in the chemical industrie and especially with the birth of my two daughters. Got back into the game with buying the Sony NWZ-A15 and converting from 128bit mp3 to lossless FLACS and some high-res files. Right now I'm listening with my Sony MDR-1A and I'm using at my desktop a ifi iDSD LE.
I stumbled across this forum after searching for some meaurements for the Modi2 from Schiit. I was interested in the popular "Schiit Stack" and was getting curious after reading a lot of the "first war" between Nwavguy and especially Jason. After reading a lot about it I'm just waiting for my Sennheiser 6xx from the last Massdrop drop to buy me a O2Objective amp. I was searching for a budget DAC and the Modi was still on my list.
After ending at this forum, I started to read a lot more about the "second war" between now Amir and Mike.
Alright, enough words, I will dive deep down in the threads now, after getting the introduction out of the way :D.

Edit: Please, keep it like history, no third war...

Welcome to the forum Ingo. When I worked for Sony our R&D group in Europe was in Cologne so I had the good fortune of visiting your lovely city!

As to war between Mike and I, it did not even get to that. He simply said my loaned DAC must be broken and that was that. The "war" had been between their fans and us here.

Anyway it is good in that results do need to be scrutinized and questions to make sure there are no mistakes. And in general, I am completely emotionless on these things. We are talking about gear, not world peace.

Truly American college is weird. Ask any non American about college sports and they will have no idea what you are talking about. College = intellect. Sports? That’s not part of the curriculum.

Greetings, all. I'm a recent lurker to this site, but a long time audio fan. There is some really great insight here, so thank you for the resources.

I'm an engineer with a degree in Engineering Physics and a M. Sc. in electrical engineering, specializing in data acquisition systems for physics experiments.
To be honest, most of my work is in the software realm, but I have a sufficient background in DSP and electronics to follow most threads here.
A lot of what I see in audio today causes raised-hackles/tingling-spidey-senses, thus, my arrival here...
