Technics EPC-P22 with EPS-202ED stylus
Last week, I found a Technics SL-QL1 near me for a very reasonable price. I intended to give it as a birthday gift to a friend, but I just couldn't part with it.
The seller told me it worked perfectly, but I soon found that was not the case. The tonearm got stuck about 3/4 of the way in. I replaced the belt, but that didn't solve the problem. I then realized that the issue was dried-up grease on the tonearm rail. I removed it, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, and re-lubricated it with a high quality synthetic grease. Voilà, now it really does work perfectly
Anyway, it came with an EPC-P22 with the original bonded EPS-22ED stylus.
Not too long ago, I purchased an NOS EPS-202ED nude stylus, which also works with this cartridge.
You can see difference between the two in this
post.
This EPS-202ED is nearly unused, but the cantilever does have a noticeable tilt to the right, likely due to suspension degradation.
Despite this, it sounds quite nice and does not show any obvious tracking issues.
I'm guessing the blip at 700 Hz may have something to do with the linear tracking mechanism (EDIT: never mind, appears to be stylus-related).
I wonder if the seemingly less than usual HF loss in the inner grooves is also due to this.
