Introducing the Phono Cartridge Measurement Library

Two online shoops on top of the search list

Discogs has 10 for sale of CBS STR-100.
Those shops are highlighted in your search because the results are localised to your geographic location. In, I assume, France or somewhere in the EU.

Of the ten Discogs records you mention, nine are in the US and 1 is in Australia.

I genuinely appreciate the attempt to help, though.

So what,Sometimes or rather most times- you have to accept thet you have to import. I do that all the time. Test records are a niche product… But a Clearaudio dealer can get you one , but the price will be about the same as importing yourself..

Back to topic,
Just bought one at Hi-Fi Heaven, 120.- free shipping. Couldn't find a better deal, one of my tables is a Clearaudio anyway, so why not.

Thanks for your gracious assistance, Balle.

Technics EPC-P22 with EPS-202ED stylus

Last week, I found a Technics SL-QL1 near me for a very reasonable price. I intended to give it as a birthday gift to a friend, but I just couldn't part with it.

The seller told me it worked perfectly, but I soon found that was not the case. The tonearm got stuck about 3/4 of the way in. I replaced the belt, but that didn't solve the problem. I then realized that the issue was dried-up grease on the tonearm rail. I removed it, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, and re-lubricated it with a high quality synthetic grease. Voilà, now it really does work perfectly :)

Anyway, it came with an EPC-P22 with the original bonded EPS-22ED stylus.

Not too long ago, I purchased an NOS EPS-202ED nude stylus, which also works with this cartridge.

You can see difference between the two in this post.

This EPS-202ED is nearly unused, but the cantilever does have a noticeable tilt to the right, likely due to suspension degradation.

Despite this, it sounds quite nice and does not show any obvious tracking issues.

I'm guessing the blip at 700 Hz may have something to do with the linear tracking mechanism (EDIT: never mind, appears to be stylus-related).

I wonder if the seemingly less than usual HF loss in the inner grooves is also due to this.

Thanks for that measurement @mackat !

Yeah, the lesser HF loss should be an advantage of a linear tracker, right? And this is with an elliptical stylus?

have you compared the numbers from the csv file with something measured on a pivoted arm? just eyeballing the graph it looks down around 2db in that 12kish range and down 4db at 20k. similarish to the new AT you posted. @aaaakkkk is using a linear tracking psx800 and is getting similar loss on the inner sweep i think.

And crosstalk/azimuth differs. I wonder if zenith differs as well (1000 Hz signals).

Any possibility the 10k dip would be a setup issue?

I don't think so, as I got very similar results. Will post shortly. I'm currently waiting to hear back from the distributor to see what Nagaoka said about this.

Nice photos, by the way!

Nagaoka MP-700

This is certainly a strange one:

Nagaoka MP-700 _ Outer _ 1.4 g _ ~150 pF _ 50k Ω _ CA-TRS-1007 #2 - Side B _ 1.png

Here is a measurement of the MP-500 stylus on the MP-700 body:

Very similar to the MP-500 body, so the issue seems to be with the MP-700 cantilever assembly.

It is interesting that they were able to bring down 2nd harmonic distortion so much on the MP-700. Much closer to typical ML/Shibata levels.

I am really curious to know what they say, what is causing this, and if it is a defect or a design choice of some sort.

Picture of my MP-700 (on a different turntable than used for these measurements):

(Yes, two of my headshell lead colors are reversed, but they're connected properly)
