Introducing Denotiva DIY speakers!

I haven't heard of a driver popping back up in Fs after burn in. Curious why that happens? I can think of a few things, but I'd just be spitballing

Sorry if this is too off topic

The Sig180 did not return fully to out of box, but did give back most of the lower Fs. Amir has a thread for this topic and will contribute more there once I get PE’s response. I plan to try the burn-in to some new Purifi woofers and see how they behave as well.

From the description it seems like the drop in Fs is a reversible change due to temperature, not a permanent burn-in effect. We saw something similar with the kh-80 ambient temperature effect on bass response.

I guessed it might be temperature related. Cool

I guessed it might be temperature related. Cool

While temperature change is a factor, the materials used are likely the root cause. At 10V for 2 hours, the driver does get warm to touch. It is pretty common to use heat to soften adhesive/sealants. As the sealants cool, they harden again and this would explain why the Fs rebounds as observed. The spider and the surround are the 2 key parts suspending the cone. How they and related sealants respond to temperature cycling can make for a much more complex relationship.

Also Fs is not the only parameter that is being affected either. If the major TS params change in a more congruent manner, targeted speaker may be achieved despite the driver not matching published specifications. @Dave Bullet showed an example of this in an earlier post,

At this stage, I have no further updates from Parts Express to share. I will keep after them but clearly feel it is time to move on. While am disappointed the SIG180 did not work out, it should be fine in a bigger box. That said, I have better drivers for bigger boxes so will wait and see.

I have modeled the Wavecor in Bass box and it meets my vented f3 target (mid 40s). I have also cut a front baffle for the Wavecor and just need to mount it to a box. Will remove the baffle from the Directiva box that I modified to fit the SIG180 and mount the WF182 baffle to it. This way I can try both vented and PR alignments readily. My test rig is currently configured for Directiva r2 and need to finish it before I can do a spin with the updated Denotiva. Since that may be a while, will sneak in session with the mindsp and get an early look.:)

Can confirm the bass is back with the Wavecor woofer!:) Like the Purifi woofer, vented may be challenging as the 2x8 port I used had prominent 800 Hz resonance.

Switched to the PR for now.

What a model name, and what a price tag. Prettier than sig180 to me.

Hoping that I can make this one a shorter effort than r2, I played with it for a good part of Friday. Still contemplating the baffle step but the larger issue is doing a full spin. Before I do, I felt this speaker should get the same beveling as Directiva r1, so had to take it apart. I have a new cordless compact router and so used it for flush trimming. The round over was done on my router table. After some touch up sanding, am ready to reassemble. Plan to resume testing tomorrow. :)

Of all the parameters related to audio, none are as simple to measure, or reflect a more precious resource, then time. Acronyms are popular, so how about Tm? Unmeasurable gratitude to you for your high Tm investment in DIY!

Back on the test stand, but still needs some alignment and calibration before spins…

P.S. also looks like I need to trim the upper shelf as is a bit too wide!

Are you using a lazy susan / pre-marked off axis angles for your stand / setup?

I used to use a carousel for my measurement rig, but it was cheap and had many drawbacks in my carpeted measurement space. The new rig posted in my pics is marked for the various angles. The pic is blurry and the main marks are on the sides and back so they are hard to see. The new rig has casters to allow it to pivot around a speaker spike on the bottom. I had to try several speaker spikes to get something that centered consistently, but the current one works nicely. There is another thread where I started to show some of the initial construction...

If there is interest, can show more there once I get some spins completed :)

Just after my Tuesday post, our area got hit by a major storm with tornado activity. New spins have been delayed as my daughter is home with her cat. Her place has been without power since and the estimate for recovery is still days out. Unless she leaves sooner, next weekend is our eldest’s wedding. So may be another week before I get back to DiY stuff.

Such is life, but some time away from diy with family usually makes me motivated when I can get back at it. Had to take a break myself for some dental surgery. Old me would be quite bothered by these kinds of delays but current me cherishes the slower pace.

Congrats on the impending nuptuals! May the young couple be blessed with deep love, health, and happiness.

Well got spins in earlier in the week and have been playing with crossover designs for most of the week. The Wavecor has some rough spots that make it better if crossed low but the Dayton tweeter wants to be crossed higher. Am going to proto the lower cross and see how the tweeter handles. Can always go back to the DXT. Am also looking at the Wavecor tweeter but PE is stocked out.
