The DAC seems very disappointing. Also the looks are straight out of the 90s.

new jbl , d class look good start View attachment 390723
Now that is not bad...hopefully the inside is just as tech pretty...if you use a sandblasted tempered glass face plate, you could have the whole thing glow with a light source anywhere behind it. So many things you can do to make a product look better. Backlit laser cut logo...Most of the audio industry design on boxes is pretty staid. Not everyone, but most.

It would be nice if Onkyo is able to implement the power stage design of DTM-7.4 in the future TX-RZ30.

Yes, it is very lazy design. One major thing would be to add to an AVR is three VU meters. LCR, you don't need surrounds and upfiring meters. It would look a lot cooler for very little money. I think three VU meters would cost much less than $50. Moving needles will give us enjoyment! Also, what about adding the $1 clipping leds like they have on all pro gear? It seems like the manufacturers don't want anyone to know..........

1/ there is lcd pannel in : can emulate perhaps
2/ 50 buck for 500 $ avr :)
3/ its not just vu meter , you must ingenering this little thing in digital 'motherboard '

I like that new heat photo signature addition to the review. It's informative and plain old cool... No matter how many times I see those images I still think they are cool.
I mean, parts are cool, but parts are warm, and some are even hot!

I am glad you see value from it. It is a newer higher resolution thermal camera from Infiniray called the P2 Pro. It is worlds better than my old Seek Thermal which stopped working with its app. :(
Thanks for the tip, I got one at a local webshop for a reasonable price. Tested it on my cats you can see them clearly in the dark but also my own footprints on the wooden floor.
Picking out hotspots in electrical cabinets is pretty easy and warmer power cables are visible.

I would love to see a blind ABX listening test pitting this thing fed by digital source material against a stack comprising Topping DAC paired with Benchmark pre- and power amp driving reasonably efficient speakers. I'd bet pretty large that no statistically significant preference or even difference would be reported by listeners. IOW, I think output would be audibly indistinguishable.

After the Onky Pro 885 (Integra 9.8) I promised to never touch an Onkyo A/V product ever again.
