I had a US$1.50 coupon at the local e-commerce website, I needed a NiMH charger because my previous smart charger just decided to output 0mA on all channels for whatever reason. My budget is zero because I'm going to use newly-bought USD$0.77 Ikea LADDA batteries (made in Japan)
This thing is so cheap, I couldn't even find it on aliexpress,
That's it, the inside is just a diode and an 18Ω resistor in series. Plus LED. Single channel of course.
Charges at around 0.17 to 0.2A according to my USB meter.
Actually kind of a smart idea - Cell voltage is relatively constant (1.1 to 1.5V) versus a 4.5V source, the voltage drop across the resistor varies just a bit so we get a somewhat constant-enough current source. Not so sure about the batteries seeing 5V open circuit voltage tho, but I was told this is as harmless as static electricity.
Just sharing what are the kind of circuits people will dare to sell as a complete product.
