Where he says that your Preamp clipping is just as bad as your amplifier clipping is:I wonder, ...it sounds like this anyway:
1:30 into the video, he drives amp into clipping.
Edit:
Damn, this is embarrassing. That I can not distinguish if the distortion is generated by the speaker itself or if it is done by amplifier clipping.
You can test it yourself with your Tablet, right? What do you think?
I do it at least once a day, vigorously!
In fact, People pay GOOD money for that!
The only danger is if your PreAmp drops a fet and decides to poop full DC to your Amp. And most have a circuit/ Filter/ Capacitor to stop that or some kind of Circuit protection. Your OpAmp may take the stairway to heaven. Or, you would have a VERY high Biased signal at 2 Volts before it shuts down. But that just does not happen as he states in the video and is rare that it damages speakers due to preamp overload or clipping. So your not getting the Full DC output of the amp. It just sounds like a ground loop. (Mostly often)
From the IT / Tech side of things? the amplifiers in a laptop or tablet are made in such a way so that they are designed technically not to have any clipping especially if they are using Windows. but they can easily distort those small speaker drivers.
to test if your drivers in the laptop or just overloaded and are actually distorting , a 40 Hertz signal on a Piezo tweeters and see if you can hear anything. the Distortion that comes out is very apparent. And easily noticeable.
the Distortion you most likely here are these little tiny drivers actually playing way too much power for what they were designed.
most consumers will gladly trade Fidelity for loudness
