This article discusses Bell Labs culture and management. I have collaborated with many former Bell Labs people.
I had many friends at Xerox PARC where a culture of open exploration and invention changed the world. Sadly the Xerox parent company did not follow up as documented in the book Fumbling the Future. The Apple McIntosh user interface was stolen by Steve Jobs over the objections of the Xerox manager Adele Goldberg.
PARC's mission was not music, but ASR readers may enjoy this story about an early music synthesizer at Xerox PARC where a musician could play in on a keyboard, have the music notated, edit the notation, then play it out.
