Hallo everyone. I have had the opportunity to listen to some open baffles last week,
one stand alone driver with no crossover, and whaooo
and another 3 way drivers
the sound is amazing both ways.
But the low end is a bit weak.
My music room has a back room that is about 5ft deep and 20ft wide
with a simple door opening.
I wonder what about installing some low end woofers in this doorway ?
Is that a good idea ?
Not necessarily a sub but simple a good base to help the open baffles ?
Thank you.

It should work, but perhaps not as well as a "tuned" ported box, or a smaller sealed box. Plug the woofer's Thiele-Small parameters into speaker design software (WinISD is free). Then you can experiment virtually with different designs.

Did you listen in your space? I believe the room has a bigger effect with dipole/bi-pole speakers.

Open baffle speakers generally aren't good for bass. A lot of people use several large woofers in an open baffle, or you have to good idea of using a different design for the woofer

What do you mean back?)) Some people don't like rear subs, while others are willing to listen to music while sitting on a sub.

In general case, the short answer is "Yes."

Yes, look for 12" - 15" woofers with Fs around 35 Hz, Qts =0.6 - 0.7 and Xmax = 8 mm or bigger.
When opening and closing the door (if needed) be gentle and slow, otherwise it will launch woofer membranes out in the room!

Integration is not easy - for any system of sub(s) plus speakers, but you should try.

here is one, but why would it be better than the infinite baffle ?

A ported box can be "tuned" for a lower -3dB cutoff frequency. The tuning basically recovers some of the energy from the back-side of the driver that's lost inside the infinite baffle. But a sealed box has a gentler roll-off below the cutoff so at some point the curves cross so you're getting more deep bass. But it usually needs to be boosted with EQ to get useful output at those lower frequencies. I assume an infinite baffle has a similar gentle roll-off.

This post shows the generalized trade-offs between sealed and ported designs.

WinISD should show the same thing, except more specifically for your driver and your large "box", or for a smaller ported or sealed box.

I do not have any, I listened to some last month

You'll have trouble finding open baffle subs compared to traditional subs in Europe or the US for the most part but you have a few available in Europe. Are you handy enough to build your own, it would give you more options if you went this route? Also, I'd consider going a with a ripole design, as there are a number of added benefits over traditional open baffles and subs with a lower extension and a better cardioid response. Here is a diy example from another member
The limited options for commercial dipole/ripole/open baffle subs may dictate going to DIY or a traditional subwoofer. If you're determined to get sime OB speakers I'd hold off on the sub till after you get them. Many people don't realize how far out into the room the speakers are required to get the best sound and depending on the speakers it may influence what sub purchase to make.

And some completed subs available available in Europe (see pic as I just googled it and took a screenshot)

replace the door with something much sturdier
Ok. I was going to write about this.
A friend is currently using two 21" speakers in his IB. They're regular professional ones, with a Q factor of probably around .3.
I used to have an IB with a regular pro 18"s, Q .29, 29 Hz. In DBA (with same sealed rears) it worked like this:

I don't see much point in chasing high-Q drivers while ignoring the room transfer function.

It's unclear how good a location this door is for a subwoofer. You can test it using any speaker in (sealed) box. REW RoomSim might also be useful. It would be a shame if the sub in this place created significant problems.

What about you listening experience between the Infinite, Ripole and the classique sub in a box. Also, my intention for the backroom was .not subs but merely the "low middle to low", before the subs take over.

3x 15" woofers, any good ideas where to buy this in Europe ?

This woofer is suitable for open baffle:

Here you can read more about that woofer and the results of the measurements when that woofer is placed in a open baffle of that size, width:

thank you for the link and this is what matters, comment at the end of the link :

but other than that it sounded damn good :)

I think that this is way more important than all the measurments
