Improving ASR as a member/moderator

The only thing I can think of a way such a subforum is useful to, is up the forum's traffic, just like gossip, easy stuff around, etc, the works.
I don't think ASR's character is about this.

Forum's SNR may suffer.

An ENTIRE subforum for snake oil?? I don't think that's necessary? What about chucking it in the "Member Area" subforum where all the snake oil threads can live with UFO discussions?

I think a "Help" subforum where people post measurements or questions would be far more, umm, helpful.

Big agree on this one.

While snake oil stuff may be a large part of the subforum, it could be limited to a subsection. As Amir and I discussed, reviews of products would have a home in this subforum as well. Would be more of a section on what not to buy and why. Am not going to mash all the threads on snake oil pushers or companies into one thread, so the new subforum would give it a more of a home rather than having it scattered all over the greater forum,

On a help subforum, I think it will come to fruition as well, but Amir wants to wait a bit longer.

As Amir and I discussed, reviews of products would have a home in this subforum as well.
This is my main motivation to create the new subforum. I currently stick all the tweak reviews in the analog section, making them hard to find. I have done a ton of these already from power to wiring. So would be good to give them a dedicated home.

I have to say that you're moderation is by far the best experience I have had on ASR thus far. Whoever the new moderators will be, they have a big shoe to fill.

And I apologize, if I inadvertently give you a hard time.

While at it ? The UFO tread , some post in it are not fit for the forum, possibly magnitudes more insane than the typical subjectivist hifi drivel ?
Some pure conspiracy theorist moon hoax stuff is hiding out in that tread , things no well intended forum would like to be visible or searchable .

I vote for removing it entirely or bury it in the snakeoil sub forum , some of the believers could moderate it with the titel "supreme grand cuckoo" :)

Or "the sarcophage of dead myths"

You could try just not reading the UFO thread?
Thereby not playing into the aliens' hands

What? An UFO thread?
Never was more excited about anything else on ASR

Hello fellow ASR members!

Just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge some less obvious, but valuable efforts that go on here. I have seen a few posts since I resumed moderator duties that emphasize that there is only one ASR moderator now. While it is true that I am the only current holder of the moderator badge, the resulting activity is greatly improved by:
  1. Several key supporting members that add their time and effort to improving moderation here. Some bring added experience and others just put in some extra effort. As many may not want their contributions known, will not identify these members specifically, but want to thank you for your support! I do not do this job alone.
  2. Amir (who actually does a little moderation) has been supportive as I am still an apprentice moderator here. Navigating a membership that is culturally diverse, technically diverse and often strongly opinionated is challenging. Balancing tolerance while maintaining order is notably so. When frequently dealing with more negative issues, it can be difficult to see the more positive side. Amir has helped me do so.
  3. All the ASR members who show restraint, respect others and contribute your talent to help others here, my sincerest thanks as well.
Finally, would just like to emphasize I may not always be your notion of an ideal moderator but am trying. Before I take action, I usually will give you some early feedback rather than issue warning points or a ban. If you have a question or complaint, use the Report feature or start a personal conversation with me. I try my best to be fair and objective. If you do not like my response, you can always appeal to Amir. Posting your complaint on a thread is less likely to help your cause and any extended dialog only clutters it for others.

Thanks again for supporting me and ASR!

Sincerely,

Rick
Just seen this post - but to add my feedback.

You are doing a great job.

As mentioned, staying positive can be challenging as a moderator. The last forum software update added a functionality that has a more positive focus. The featured content section is that new functionality. Until recently, we had not utilized this new functionality. Unlike home page thread promotions, moderators can add threads to the featured section.

So, now helping the staff moderate is also more than just reporting problems. Will try to keep the featured section fresh. So, if you see exceptional value in a particular thread, please report or DM your candidates for the Featured Content section. Thanks!

Has been a while since I last posted here and thought would share a (hopefully helpful) update...

ASR had more bans recently than I have done for most of last year. Seems our popularity is attracting those who will become members just to argue against our objective approach or just to boost their own brand. While we limit commercialism or arguing the same point endlessly, some level of healthy dissent is key to ensuring we are challenging topics that are not well defined. Even some of our luminaries do not fully agree and this is worthwhile for us to explore. Given this, it is also reasonable that the younger and less renowned amongst us should have be able to add to the forum.

In this light, am renewing Amir's previous call to be more open to new members and hopefully keeping the discourse here fresh and productive. While I immensely appreciate members who help flag some of the more toxic behavior that can occur on a more open forum, want to ensure we have some reasonable tolerance for new members. Some of you have contacted me to express your concerns about more recent waves of problematic members. On this front, will share that we noticed an increase as well and discovered some of our automated spam filtering was disabled and needed updating. This is now fixed.

With this in mind, we should see the quality of new member and new member posts improve. Please keep this in mind as we welcome them to ASR. :)

Best wishes,

Rick

I haven't seen smoke come out of my laptop for months, so you must be doing something right.

Tough job… thanks!

Thank you Rick, I find the "ignore" feature to be a very handy filter for a level of personal intolerance.

Exactly! More should resort to using it no matter the level of hors*sh!t being spewed.

Thanks @RickS !!!

ASR is my absolute favorite hang and aside from Amir, the critically essential forum structure, a lovely wide-ranging cast of characters, and the insane topic variety, I most appreciate your work here. You are the glue. You too are essential and perhaps a wee bit underappreciated.

Thank you!

I don't know how you do it given the news and public discord of the times making it difficult to hold one's tongue. It seems pretty tame around here at ASR.
I guess I have not perceived that new members are a greater source of malfeasance. Anyway, great job Rick.

Great job , moderating this :) but I’m still very puzzled by why people just join to spew subjectivist nonsense all over .

Even more puzzling folks that have been members for years arguing this way learning nothing at all ?

It would be a greater learning experience for me if we where able to discuss the gray areas of audibility of some concepts, without some folks use this as a wedge or springboard to start the measurement is not everything agenda or R2R and NOS filter really are special in some mysterious way .
I’m also well aware off the fact the DAC’s have been a solved problem for 30 years or so , but there are nuances that could be had .
Just as an example.

Or a civil discussion about the limitations of the current knowledge of speakers in a constructive way ? That I as an amateur could learn from :)

What about a tag in the discussion thread, "Technical Discussion, Not Audibility"? These discussions could lead to audible differences, but the topic would be flagged to make it clear that the intent was not to challenge long-standing claims regarding audibility.

Problem is audibility is key. Technical discussions are meaningless unless they are framed against a backdrop of common understanding of what is audible.

A technical discussion of the performance of any gear or subsystem must inevitably, eventually, ask the question "is it good enough, or do we need to make it better"
