As for the offsite linking policy, you can see it was in place before I became a moderator. Since Amir summarized it in the site Terms and Rules, I know he is serious about it. I am consistent about enforcing it but do not catch every instance.
Ime, find it rare that the offsite content needs to be linked. Unless the offsite content really contains visual evidence, many of the posts I encounter are done because the member thought it was cool or was convenient for them. If you are reading a technical paper and you reference someone else’s work, you footnote it. You would not drop a reference without explaining it nor would you quote the entire supporting work. In this respect, I find the ASR policy to be a reasonable one. Also, if you have been around for a while, you start to encounter broken links. Knowing why the content was linked initially allows the context to be maintained even if the link is broke. Ideally, the policy should be more restrictive to avoid potential security issues as well.
In any case, based on the thread above, most members support it. At most, am open to refinements but will be subject to Amir’s approval.
