Improving ASR as a member/moderator

and if they don't read it and then act like fools, you can just reply with a link to go read the damn thing instead of reinventing the wheel every time
That already exists

a FAQ? I know there's a (closed) 8 page thread about one, but I can't seem to find the actual FAQ, and it's not linked in the header or footer afaict
Maybe I'm wrong. I swore we had something for noobs that could be linked.

FAQs are part of Forum Suggestion subtopic. Had just mentioned to Amir that I it could use more exposure in the forum UI.

See here…

nice, thanks, didn't come up in a google search. i notice it should be updated to include ascilab distribution

The fact that it is hard to find kinda indicates that a link improvement is necessary. Or no?

A link to a FAQ for new members being the bare minimum imo. As previously mentioned, this would probably prevent a lot of unnecessary back and forth.

If the FAQ also contained certain proven aspects of audio science relating to: audibility, ABX testing, SINAD (and it's relevance) etc, then:

"Please see Section X in the FAQ" could be a game changer in terms of wasted time on explanations.

I think that in the long run this would make moderation a lot easier, as well as preventing a lot of the frustration likely felt by those members having to continuously explain the same points ad nauseum.

PS. I am extremely impressed with your patience with this unruly, opinionated mob. (myself included.)

You are both doing an amazing job.
Kudos!

Thanks folks! A number of the proposed changes (notably registration) are being implemented and tested.

Do not know about permanent FAQ changes but added it to the Featured threads for now. :)

I could only find it yesterday by using the search function, it wasn't obvious to me it existed before. So any improvement to visibility seems a good idea.
The same goes for the other policies, e.g. don't post ai unless you know where it's wrong etc, I don't see how it's obvious to newbies that these policies exist, and you cannot blame people for not following rules they didn't know about.

Not sure how registration was back in 2017, but the last part of the dialog does require you to confirm that you read the Terms and Policies. So there is no denying that they should know the policies at the time of registration AND can be revisited via a link in the bottom right of the forum UI as well as the end of my every post I make.

I don't see the additional and evolving policies I mentioned in the terms and policies, or any hint they exist. Same for the faq.

Agree policies may change over time. Please be more specific of which policies are not currently stated.

Also good "recommended reading" (not only) for newcomers is IMHO this thread:

How about a permanent banner on top of each page with something to the affect of "you can not hear anything that is not measurable" or other better worded fact about audibility.

Thanks, has been kicked around and would have to be done without looking like propaganda or indoctrination.

After all, is Audio Science (Review) not enough of a clue? :)

I have re-read the FAQ #1 and only things not covered are Amir's new relationship with Ascilap and maybe a bullet about moderation, decorum and tolerance of those less experienced, new to audio or audio measurement. I would also say, have all members old and new have to had read FAQ1 and rules checked a box saying they read and agree to all site rules in order to post. Can't remember what was required in 2021 when I joined. Also a more expanded FAQ and list of common acronyms would be nice, but understand the team is small and pay is not great.

Just a quick reminder about that thread topic thing!

If you post here, am expecting it will be more constructive please. Thanks!

The membership diversity here is what has made this forum considerably more vibrant than essentially all of the Xenforo- (etc.) based, old-school "forums" that are slowly but surely dying in the age of other modes of online social interaction.

Since the thread's meant to be constructive, I guess the constructive corollary would be encourage diversity and actual discussion (as opposed to regurgitation of dogma). ;)

Not clear on the dogma aspect, but some of the more open discussion posts made me wonder if a more dedicated Suggestions thread or area might be useful?

I was being deliberately pejorative in my choice of the word dogma. :)

This, e.g., would not be a discussion.
First Poster: Reproduction of audio from digital media is fundamentally flawed by the loss of information between samples.

N.B. I am not saying that there's anything to discuss there! ;)

On topic -- not sure if an expanded suggestions area would add value -- but it is testable. :)
