Important news regarding moderation team....

I have agreed to help moderate for now.

Please avoid overtly political posts or you can expect them to be deleted.

Thanks!
Top Man.

There are thousands of politics discussion forums on the interweb.
I think most people come to an audio forum to see discussions of audio.
I'm surprised this basic premise is misunderstood. Look in the mirror and you'll see the problem.
You don't have to engage in political discussions if you don't want to. Yes, look in the mirror.

Previously, on ASR we regularly talked about tariffs and taxes we could expect to pay when importing goods. I found it helpful on my 2021 Hong Kong and 2023 EU purchases. I don't understand why that needs to change.

If a politician comes up with a policy that affects costs to our hobby, does it make it magically now off limits? That sounds quite limited to me. Most people can write respectful posts even if they don't always agree. Part of being an adult is sharing views in a kind way. Sometimes it may be a policy that impacts our purchase costs, sometimes it may be whether DAC's all sound the same. :D

It's sad the moderation team was so ingrained in stopping Tariff posts that it was more important than the organization they all loved? The initial impulse to stop supporting an organization because we didn't get our way, may not always be the best long term decision? I'm sad @amirm was confronted with those options. Grace and mercy wins the race. It's very possible the Tariff issue may abate sooner than anyone expects based on the recent chip, phone and computer exclusions. Sometimes wading through problems is better for our long term growth than throwing in the towel.

Aw right ... Just in case it might be useful with any coming scenario, here are 4 different versions of that nasty, nasty word which can’t be found by a simple word search.

Enjoy

Tаriff

Тariff

Tarіff

Tariff

I am not going to gain many new friends for what I am about to say, but we need to become aware of the new reality.
Between having a forum with a clipped off wings or having no forum, for me, choice is very clear.
We are witnessing situations where laws, rules, tradition, are being ignored, overruled, neglected...
I believe that Amir is acting in a self preserving fashion and I can't blame him for that.
Losing the absolute best forum for the topics we are discussing here, in order to prove how liberal or democratic we all are, is not worth the risk.

I’m not keen of having political discussions here because we are dominantly white, middle aged, and with slightly above average disposable income. We have the data how that group voted.

But I don’t understand the issue of discussing policies that affect our hobby.

They feel allowing this means we are violating our rule of no political discussion.
I would agree with them.
I feel that the human aspect of this is so immense that it garners discussion. Heck, I think it demand discussion lest we look like we want to turn a blind eye to incredible suffering that we are causing for many people both in US and around the world.
I would agree with that as well. I would, however, disagree that this is the place to do it- there's LOTS of places on the Internet where such discussions are appropriate.

Just my 2 cents.

... It seems the USA is becoming more and more like Europe (the French will know what I'm talking about).

... American people - please stop this madness soon!

Not picking on anyone's comments in particular, but obviously, there is much for me to learn.

Is there a short list of countries that do NOT tariff imports?

I think the mod team was excellent: thanks!

I still think, given how diverse our opinions are, that banishing any "political" subject remains a good idea.

But... this is Amir's place. He's the host, we're the guests. I believe that, as the owner of this site, Amir has the right to express his opinion. If that makes the guests unhappy, they are free to leave. As far as I am concerned, I would have no problems being subject to moderation while the owner of the place is not.

See Amir's posts as editorials. As such, they are more grounded in reality than Stereophile's editorials anyway. And, on top of that, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and many other "left wing" ;) ;) institutions agree with him.
The Wall Street Journal is hardly a left wing institution. It's owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Well Amir i think you were totally in your right to explain the tarifs from your point of view.
I don't have much respect for colletivelly stepping down.its the easy way.
I hope you manage to find other mods, who are just as good as the gone ones.
Best of luck.

I am really shocked to just read what happened here over the weekend.

From one side I can understand why Amir did put a big importance in this topic, as the day comes where we want to stand up, fight and make our world a better living place.

On the other hand the way he did it and most important not discussing it before with his team was really problematic and it was obvious it would cause problems, although I didn't expect of this size.

I would like to thank the great ex moderator team and must say that their stance once again showed once again the quality their persons and moral.

I hope after few days when everything calms down again there will be some reconsideration and mutual human discussion and agreement as we don't this short stain to stay on this beautiful rational approach lighthouse platform and hope they will then accept back their so important roles in it.

To the best of my knowledge, that list is a null set, though there are some countries which impose very small across the board tariffs or only tariff particular goods. Some countries with low across the board tariffs, tariff some goods excessively, as in well over 200%, (protectionism) utterly discouraging importation of those goods. This allows them to disingenously claim low tariffs overall. "Lie, damn lies, and statistics."

the real problem is americain and people dont understand he do the best for your country ..

the moderator seem to be good man , its rare ..

Given Amir’s previous working experiences with Microsoft (collaboration & computation & conversation overcome differences & difficulties) and the current market issues with regard to his current company(s) I figure he finally reached a thermodynamic boiling point and his pressure vessel exploded after many weeks of what I can only imagine consisted of “shouting obscenities at the radio/tv”.

I feel for him, like I feel for the mods, and the many, many millions upon millions in the U.S and around the world affected by the current political landscape and the untold repercussions due to the actions of the few.

There is absolutely nothing that I, as a short, squat, hairy 50yr old Scotsman can offer to anyone involved to aid the coming years, except to say……coming from a mechanical/electronic engineering background this is probably the first website I view upon sitting down every day……..and with my SPMS you’d better believe I do a LOT of sitting down……….. I enjoy this forum…….. I enjoy the rational aspect……. I enjoy the education I have garnered from threads…….. i enjoy the scientific rigour posted by the forum members……....long may it survive and flourish as a beacon for knowledge…… floating well above a sea of mediocre shite.

;)
