Importance of SPL-Response Linearity

I want to disagree about “sane levels of listening”. I certainly don’t listen to anything continuous or sustained at 90+db. However, I listen to music with fairly high dynamic range, and there are very short peaks that probably get there. If you want to listen to The Rite of Spring, and have both the bassoon intro and the horns in the following movements give the proper impact, you need those peak levels. Some electronic music (discussed elsewhere in terms of power demands in an infamous Harbeth video) has peaks at low frequencies that exceed these levels.
