IK Multimedia iLoud MTM Review (active monitor)

I just wanted to pop in and share my $45 desktop solution for iLoud MTMs:

All you need is 2 cheap microphone arms, and a 5$ bag of tension springs (the arms' stock weight limit is a bit too low).

Your picture doesn't work. :)

How about now?

They look good, but I don't think i'd trust cheap microphone arms to support £600 worth of monitors, whatever springs they had on them. I've had several cheap 'Anglepoise style' lamps break on me and the cheap microphone arm I own doesn't seem to be made any better. Hopefully yours are made of stronger stuff.

That's understandable. The arms seem pretty solid, but without the extra springs they had a tendency to just fall to the desk. The only time I ever broke one of these arms was by way over-tightening the adjustment knobs, which is why I went for the extra springs instead.

I'll definitely update if things go poorly.

I just noticed this arm that is designed to hold an SLR camera and claims to support 5lbs/2.3kg (I believe the MTMs are 2.1kg)...

Interesting... It looks pretty much identical to mine. If I had to guess, the difference is probably higher-tensioned springs, and a stiffer pivot where the camera mounts.

Indeed, the springs look quite chunky, but it also has three tubes, rather than two, on the lower part of the arm.

hey guys, I'm almost pulling the trigger to buy those speakers, I have a question: I need a dac like the schiit modious and I'm sorted? or do I need anything else to power them?

Any balanced DAC (such as the modius) should work fine. The MTM's are quite sensitive, so you might want to get a passive inline xlr attenuator to help avoid clipping.

There is an input sensitivity switch (+4dBu/-10dBV), and also an input volume control (-12dB to 0dB)—I don't see why you'd need a passive attenuator?

I'm using mine straight off my Topping DX7 Pro, XLR, +4dBu, input volume attenuated to a little louder than I'd ever use, listening volume set by the DAC's digital output level knob. (While some would say to use the DAC without digital gain, a passive attenuator instead, the math just doesn't bear that out for a quality 24-bit DAC. So if you like a passive attenuator, fine, but don't do it because of fidelity or input sensitivity concerns.)

The Schiit Modius specifies the output level at 4.0 V RMS balanced, the DX7 Pro at 4.2 V RMS. If I'm not having a sensitivity problem, you won't either. :) I don't know how you intend to use it, but for listening at my computer, I like having that volume knob on the Topping right in front of me (also a remote control, if it sits farther away). But any DAC should drive the speakers fine.

Using mine with SE connection from an E30. Works great.

I must just be crazy. I keep mine at minimum volume with a -15dB attenuator connected to a Topping d70s. Even then, I usually attenuate the DAC signal another 8-20dB.

I guess I'd just prefer to never worry about clipping, even in 40hz mode.

As long as they are used nearfield and not at very loud levels these sound just fine.

Hey, guys!
Suddenly one of my MTM is not working properly anymore. After power is switch on it works only for 15-30 seconds and then it is shutdown automatically.
I don't have warranty anymore and not sure if I can find good service in Bali :D so maybe some advices what I can try (know to work with soldier, can replace details, but don't have skill to check the chain and find where is a problem.
Many thanks!

You would need to have some expert like knowledge to trouble shoot unless it is a well known and documented 'standard' fault.
Inform yourself where you can get it serviced.

Would these be bad for a small living room setup? Listening distance would be around 3-4m. I currently have the Kali LP6s but I am thinking of getting something a bit smaller because the Kali's are huge physically and soundwise. When I use them "loud" they are at around 30-35% volume and the regular listening levels are at around 15-25% so the MTMs "not being loud enough" should not be an issue.
