If you have to get used to the sound, is it actually not good?

I'd say the converse is true; if it sounds great immediately then it's a great system.

I've noticed that depending on how tired and exposed my ears have been during the day.... Different levels of loudness and music sounds better or worse to me ... But also the time of listening changes. Sometimes I can listen for hours... And sometimes I don't care for music, and just prefer silence.

My stereo might be static, dialed in and EQ'd - exactly like yesterday, but I'm apparently not.

This might sound like a strange thing for me to say, but if you are happy with the sound, that is all that matters. Accuracy is a means to an end, and the end is your whether you are satisfied or not. The reason I pursue accuracy is not because I am ideologically wedded to it, it's because research shows that listeners prefer accurate sound, and my own preference aligns with the research.
