If you have a large room, are the smaller 8330/8331 Genelec speakers ever more beneficial over their larger counterparts?

The 8330 vs 8351 are pretty close and not much difference in directivity. Most of their monitors in their 8000, 8300 and ones series are not terrible different in directivity. Their larger monitors which are better if baffle mounted and are for different application and they also mention cabinet diffraction if free standing.

Room volume is the major factor for the critical distance on the Genelec chart. As stated above, 8XXX monitors all have very similar directivity.

To answer the thread question, no, in the same lineup smaller is never materially better. It may be cheaper or easier to fit in the space, that's it.

If you compare across lineups or outside the 8 series, there are additional design factors of course.
