Hi everyone,

I’m looking for a headphone + amp + DAC combo.

My preferred music is cool jazz, classical, blues, and intimate acoustic recordings. Depending on what I’m listening to, I tend to look for both analytical precision and a warm, engaging tone.

I’ve done some research with the help of ChatGPT, using the following evaluation criteria:

  • Soundstage & imaging
  • Micro-details & transients
  • Timbre & naturalness
  • Dynamics & control
  • Noise & black background
  • Ergonomics & features
  • Tonal coherence / spectral balance
  • Texture and sense of physicality
  • Stage depth / holography
  • Overall speed / transient response
  • Listening fatigue / long-term comfort
  • Compatibility / impedance synergy
  • Musical versatility
  • Low-volume performance
  • Build quality & durability
  • Emotional impact & engagement
  • Overall sonic signature (neutral, warm, airy, analytical, dense, etc.)
  • Overall score

Based on these criteria, I pre-selected several combinations using HiFiMAN, RME, and Topping products:

  • Arya Organic + Topping A70 Pro + RME ADI-2 DAC
  • HiFiMAN HE1000V4 Stealth + Topping A70 Pro + RME ADI-2 DAC
  • Arya Organic + Topping A90D + Topping D90 III Discrete
  • HiFiMAN HE1000V4 Stealth + Topping A90D + Topping D90 III Discrete
  • HiFiMAN HE1000V4 Stealth + RME ADI-2 DAC + Topping A90D

Based on the AI analysis, combos 5, 2, and 4 seem to come out on top.

Of course, nothing replaces an actual listening session.

Do you have any recommendations or insights based on your own experience?

Hi,
Just a suggestion to start off on the right foot: it's better to ignore AI tools when you are looking for HiFi (or anything really). LLM agents can only work with what they are trained on and that includes a whole mess of the subjective nonsense that HiFi is plagued with. I think you got lucky with the recommendations :)

Consider electronics based on features you need or want and then on objective measurements. The three you have shortlisted are excellent btw.

btw: The RME is a DAC + Headphone Amp so you don't need anything else.
There are plenty of other good options, from a range of budgets .. like the SMSL RAW MDA 1 https://www.audiosciencereview.com/...msl-raw-mda-1-dac-headphone-amp-review.56430/

Have a look at the review index here, for Recommended and "DAC+Headphone Amp", and see what you think
If you prefer separates, that's fine too.

There is more personal preference leeway with headphones (and speakers) but I'd still start with solid objective measurements before you try them. I'm not a big headphone user so I can't comment further I'm afraid.
